This could go in a number of topics, so I'll let the mods do their part.
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?' 'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. 'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.' The man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked. 'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.' The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. 'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump,' said the man. They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. 'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked. 'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope.. That's Hell.' 'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind. You are welcome at my water bowl anytime!! I think that sums it up rather nicely! ![]()

There was a twilight zone show of just the same thing.
A country man and his dog were coon hunting, and the dog got in the water with the coon and the coon was starting to drown the dog. The man jumped in. Next thing you know, they were both laying by the water. Near the end of the show, he and the dog are walking a dirt road and he is invited in to a wonderful looking place, but the dog wasn't allowed. He turns down the invite in to "heaven" and keeps on down the road with his dog. Then he finds the true heaven which they are both invited in to. I cry every time I watched that show. I recently lost my dog and someone sent me a story about the "rainbow bridge". yep cried then too. If dogs aren't allowed in, I ain't going. I have never met a creature on earth as loving or as deserving as a dog.

If ya read it a few times, something stands out (to me at least).
The walker gets to the 1st gate and is greeted. Ice water will be 'served' but the dog is not welcome. He walks away. When he gets to the second gate, the greeter says 'help yourself'. It's over there, and there's a bowl for yer companion. The walker gets his full first, and passes the bowl to his companion. To me, this is profound. I don't wanna read anything into this, but it really made me take attention. Am I here to be served? Not in my mind. I'm here to help in any way I can. At the 2nd gate, the walker was told 'the water and bowl is over there'. The walker gets his drink, and passes the bowl to the pup. They both get their fill. Is there something more to this analogy? If ya read it, there's a lot more that can be discussed. ![]()

We love them so much, and always have to say goodbye to them.
I cannot decide if their lives are too short or if ours are too long.

Nope. Bo was enough heart break for me.
This was an e-mail sent from my 1st girlfried (yes, we still keep in touch). She's a dog lover, and twice breast cancer survivor. She helped me bury Bo in the pouring rain. It brought back a lot of memories from years gone by. She loves horses and dogs. Her parents were Catholic, and she was told that there are no pets in heaven. We talked about it and it made no sense to me. It's pretty tough trying to console the love of your life about a matter that her religion teaches, as being wrong. I like Jacks pics. "There aren't any rocks in heaven either". What if I wanna go to the lake and skip some stones? Is there anyone here that has never had the pleasure? "Dogs don't have souls. This is not open for debate". Hog wash! Dogs make decisions ALL the time. Your dog would likely die for you if presented the opportunity. Unlike many 'humans', most dogs love unconditionally. Don't insult me by telling me they have no souls. ![]() How's Ruger? ![]()

Do dogs have souls ? .... well, God made them, and made them for a reason ;
http://www.robinsweb.com/humor/god_dog.html I suspect that this is the real answer .

I reckon it's like losing a child.
On the other hand, I heard an older woman interviewed recently, and the topic of her advanced age came up. When asked about that, she said she figured she was on her next-to-last dog.

I have no doubt that my pets have a place in Heaven. I'm not sure what that is, but I had a dog a few years ago that was as good as it was possible to be, I think. She surely has a place in the eternities.

This'll probably sound a bit hokey, but I'll throw it out there anyway. When we got married 32 years ago, my wife brought along a cat. We've had two cats and two dogs ever since. Many have left us, and we still have two and two.
Although I probably know better, I've always pictured all of my animals gathered around me jumping and licking at me, and having a great time together, once I'm there with them. Probably an out-there fantasy, but it sure would be nice. I miss them all.
