Default Computer Problem

As some of you may recall, my youngest is in the USMC.

He wanted me to sign up for AOl Instant Mesanger so he cold chat with his maw (The Warden), baby sis, and dear old dad.

Since signing up, my system is bombarded every few minutes with popups that go through Nortons, AVB, and the one provided by my cable company.

I ran a spyware checker and found 15 bugs which I promptly deleted. I have cleared the temporary interney files and cache. But still get the popups.

I am unable to stop them and it's driving me from crazy to insane.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Get an agressive popup blocker and run a good adware program daily. Then dump AOHell and use MSN Messenger, it is free, works as good as AOHell and has no popups.

i like the msn messenger too. it's free & EASY to use! we have the aol messenger for troy to use while he's playing counterstrike, but unless he's playing that game, we do NOT keep it on. i'd get rid of it once & for all if it were up to me.

ISB, If you are running AOL, you shouldn't have any pop-ups. It has a built in blocker, but you have to turn it on.

I'm only using AOL IM.

I have a different ISP through my cable company.

My kids use Yahoo Messenger seems to work OK but the thing I don't like about Yahoo IM is it seems to take over your browser. I may not know how to use it but my kids sure seem to love it but when I have to get on thier computers it seems like everything is Yahoo and I get IMed from teenagers that think I'm one of the kids! I don't know how to shut it off!

It just dawned on me, you aren't using AOL IM, you have AIM, it's free because they get to flood you with pop-up advertisements and there isn't an off switch for that. You have mail! Any more questions on that, just e-mail me.

Another IM program to consider is ICQ. It was one of the first, and my son swears by it. (ICQ = I seek you)

The problems with the Yahoo and AOL messenger programs is that when you install them, if you look at the licensing agreement, you will see that by accepting the agreement, you give permission for 3rd party companies to send spyware/adware(ad popups) to your computer. Your pop-up stopper and anti-sypware/adware programs will ignore them due to the install and accepting of the agreement. Uninstall the AOL and Yahoo messengers.....reboot in SAFEMODE and run your adaware and spybot. Reboot normally and install MSN Messenger. Download and install Spywareblaster and it will help cut down on most of the spyware/adware from even getting on your computer.

Check out trillian.cc (note, not com.)

Trillian will chat with the aim folks, but without the popups, etc.
