WASHINGTON -- A day after delivering a State of the Union address aimed at showing recession-weary Americans he understands their struggles, President Barack Obama intends to award $8 billion in stimulus funds to develop high-speed rail corridors and sell the program as a jobs creator.
No US Company builds Hi Speed Rail ( Bombardier) in Canada does http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010...+Politics%2529 We won't get any of this the boondoggle here in AL but he does have plans for us. This will create a lot of jobs here NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon are dead. So are the rockets being designed to take them there — that is, if President Barack Obama gets his way. Lets see we shut down the Cape and lay railroad track. Lot of AeroSpace Engineers are into laying track ![]() http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...,2770904.story

On the high speed rail front, he's trying to emulate infrastructure spending of 1990s Japan. It didn't work for them. It won't work for us.

Borrow more money from China for another worthless project. Yup, this has never worked, so let's do it again.

"Light Rail" is predicated on the concept that inconveniencing a train load of people to "serve" the needs of a few individuals is an acceptable trade.......Ideally, a "mass transit system would consist of millions of "people pods" whisking individuals to their destinations. But that's futuristic ! BUT we do have the technology to tote commuters in smaller "packets" of a dozen or so at a better, "rate of advance", than either light rail or private cars. These systems could share space with current urban highways and arterial routes. (Every major highway could support at least four such "routes/lines" !! )
IOW, my "Beads on a String" concept isn't all that "different" from today's commuter log jam - sans the stress !! >MW |

Great idea run Canadian trains on Chinese steel tracks with the whole thing built by illegal Mexican labor. American stimulus.

Another governemt boondoggle. It will be rife with corruption and greed and it will never work like intended and it's another tax we will have to pay. NO, NO THANKS, Mr. President. I can't afford any more.

Yet another step to doing exactly what they intended all along - spend us into insolvency - so they can then seize everything under a created emergency.
And most of congress cheered for him. ANYone of them who applauded for him for ANYTHING he said last night, should be thrown out of office - and I hope they are.

Another gift to the unions. Light rail lines and intra city rail lines never support themselves. Once built, they have to be subsidized for eternity as the usage and artificially low fares (so the "less fortunate" can have access) means the tax payers will have to foot the true cost of the project. Another waste of money, but from this president, wasting money the signature of his administration.

Well, Mussolini did make the rail system run on time in Italy. At least he is following in one of his hero's footsteps.

The "big dig" in Boston a $2.8 billion project the cost $14.6 billion by the time it was finished and the harbor tunnel has so many leaks they had to shut it down and try to patch it up after a ceiling collapse killed a woman. As Yogi said: Deja Vu all over again.

The only problem I see with this idea, is the timing. Rail systems can work.

The main trouble is that the American consumer (the typical American that is) likes the individuality and comfort and freedom of being in their own car. Rail doesn't offer this. It's part of our cultural identity. Americans are NOT going to switch to high speed rail as a mode of transportation, unless............
....for some "reason," gas becomes simply too expensive. Still though, this is still a big power/money grab by government. Totally a socialist / marxist move.

While the Shinkansen is an awesome thing it's not something that America can afford now and certainly not something that would support the way most of us live.
You've got me reminiscing about those long 3 hour Shinkansen rides I took a few years back while working for a Japanese company. I actually miss it, strangely enough... ![]()
