nice pictures, but does the place ever dry out?

saving the truck from being swallowed by mud doesn't seem much like fun.

The place does dry out. Just that this is the time of year for the rains. It took LTS and I two days to jack up the truck onto blocks and then get it out. Of course that meant jacking and drinking jack to get it out, but ole LTS came through with his mechanical genius and know how. My savior! I just didn't judge the start of the bog well and that is what got it stuck. At least he made me stop before I buried it up to the axles!

Taking preventative measures to keep the truck from being swallowed may not be that much fun, but i assure you its even less fun if you don't.......

I've seen things so stuck in the mud that it took a backhoe to literally "dig" them out......."when" the backhoe could even reach it....

Yup Bill, we kill and eat 'em. Shame you never had any of the squirrel stew we have eaten. You have never tasted something so good. I would never be embarrassed to admit I eat tree rats. You yankee's have no idea what your missing! Better yet, just stick to your quarter pounders and whoppers. I'll take squirrel stew any day!

I have one very fine daughter that would kill for either some good squirrel stew or, better yet, some fried squirrel. She says it's like filet mignon compared to fried rabbit or rabbit stew.

Our Tree Rats are BIG, JUICY, succulent and oh, SOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Edited after your next post: There're also very crafty and hard to catch. One has to be very, very good to even get one for the pot.....

In case you wondered, I was born in Hartford and brought up on Mt. Dessert Island near Bass Harbor!!

I cut my teeth hunting up north until I moved south after college a hundred years ago!

IPT, nice pics of the camp. If ya get to burried to bad up there give me a holler I got a few 4x's that'll yank ya out. w/out charge like the quacks next to us get I told ya bout. LTS on jackin and blockin does do the trick. but that lil factory screw jack had to make it fun. figured he'd have a tracktor jack "hi-lift" there at camp for back-up?

Crp, I figured you could tell by looking his truck is 2wd, easiest way look at his front wheel in the pic you can see it hasn't spun by the mud mark on his tire. Where the rear you can see it spun

Well, Mr Bill37W, I too was born and raised in New York and went to school in Michigan. I finally got tired of the North after returning from my tour in the RVN in 1972. While completeing my obligation to my country, 1967 - 1972, I learned about living in many of our fine Southern states. I decided to move to Arizona in 1976 with the company I worked for then. I have only been back North once since then for a four year stint in MA from 1990-94 when I again moved back to TX. I enjoy the South and its many enjoyments and would never again move North. No offence, but I do like the refinements of Southern living. Now, since your squirrels and other rodents aparently are not to your liking, the ones down South here, are to mine. I especially like squirrel, peccary, rabbit and many other fine southern delicacy's. Too bad you have not experienced such fine quisine!

I only hunt what I eat, nothing more. What pray tell, do you hunt and eat?

Hey, IPT, LTS next time ya'll head out there, take a come-a long and chains. easier to tie up to a tree and pull it out than jack it up. we use to live by'em when I was in high school.( we'd go muddin out in the boonies and who ever had the winch always ended 2 to3 trucks back behind the one that was stuck. we was in a tight single file line. so out with the chains and come-a-long)
As for eatin tree rats: They must be somethin to it. Audy Murphy grew up on 'em and my friend and mentor Carlos (also went by White Feather) ate 'em regularly, myself included. To each his own, but no need to put other Americans down for being different. save that for the Frog Eaters.

K1, have thought many times of a come-a-long....but if you ain`t on top of this stuff, to start with.....you only drag it deeper. Although the truck doesn`t look that bad, the rear axle was on the ground before we started the lift. The road in and around camp is fine. A high-lift is on the to-buy/bring list......but us locals know not ta get offin the road in camp. ITP has now learned. LOL

Where IPT drove has only been dry twice in the last 8 years, remember....this is 100% river bottom. The river is 1-1/2 miles from camp.....but the water has been in camp as high as 6 feet. Thats why you see the fire wood tied down and the cabins raised. Ain`t no mud like it anywhere, many a nice 4x4 has been here till late summer....ifin ya get my drift, and ATV`s will lug down fast, if you stay in the mud....even without sinking. Fills the wheel wells until it stalls them out......and the only way to get going is to dig out the wheel wells, cause it don`t fall off nor spin off.

LTS, You might just find some mud like it in the Mississippi Delta. There've been several times I've gone duck huntin and been there all day diggin 4-wheelers out of buckshot and clay. We're bright enough not to take the trucks back in there(Most of the time anyway), but we still have our hands ful with the 4-wheelers. Winches come in mighty handy round where I'm from(I grew up in Lake Village, AR. Not a mile from the MS River and just a couple from Lousiana.). Even in the cotton feilds, getting around is pretty rough.

When ya sink like IPT did with no ruts cut to help with moving. the only way out is up on blocks as you did his truck. Thats why I've got one built to trailer to places like that. The light weight of this Cheby Luv with a light solid axle Dana 30 swapped under it with a Ford 4cyl. for power settin on 38.5-15-15 just enough tread to hold traction without digging it grave makes for a light footed rig.

When you do add the Hi-lift, you can get it in package deals that comes with a light base to keep it from sinking and a kit to double it as a winch. IMO one of the best self recovery units out. Well my 8,000LB winch does good too, But the Hi-lift holds it own.
