help with a savage model 420 - The Firearms Forum

i was attempting to do some research on the savage model 420 O/U 20 ga. that i just inherited form my uncle, and i found this forum seemed to have the best stuff. i have a couple of questions for all you firearms experts:

1. i disassembled the entire gun to make sure all the parts were intact and working, and somehow managed to have a piece left over, and i have no idea where it goes. i included a picture below, hopefully someone can tell me whereabouts this piece goes.

2. The stock has been sawed off, bringing the overall length of the gun to 35.5", but the barrel is still the original 26" is this gun considered "sawed-off" and illegal, or is it long enough to still be legal? If this information is not enough, i can add pictures.

answer to #2. Your legal. 18in barrel minimum 26 inch overall minimum is the law.

BOOYAH. i can just get creative and attach a more comfortable piece of wood to whats left of the stock. thanks for the info. i hope someone knows about savage 420's.

part is 99-284 - Forend Spring Spring, New Style accoring to that diagram, but i still have no idea where it would go.

*edit* i found where it goes but still want to know about buying parts

another question has risen; that sheet has prices on it, are the parts available somewhere?

since i've already asked a bunch of crap, i guess i'll add on one more question...

barrel seems to have a dent in the end, recommendations as to what to do and how much it will cost to fix?

well thats a job for a smith. you need a special dent removal tool like so

Not exactly cheap. There are other cheaper versions but they still are not cheap. Since the dent seems to be only on the muzzle end they may have other tricks. I've seen some do the "draw method" were they have a tapered slug that is threaded and its cranked drawing the slug through the dent. Its a time consuming process (putting pressure-tap, repeat) b/c just bending it back can weaken the barrel. How far back does the dent go? Cutting the barrel back can be an option but then your cutting into your choke.

do you know what the choke size is. It should say on the barrel some were. Is the barrel ribbed? Cutting and squaring is your cheapest option but it may open the choke a little. (not the end of the world, just depends on what you plan on doing with it). If you have vent rib barrel then cut placement is key to make it look right.
If you do decide to cut then you'll have to set a new sight bead since then sit about 1/4 inch back anyway. A gunsmith can set a sight bead for about 25 bucks if you provide the sight or reuse the one you have.
