Marlin and I are in Connecticut, and last night we had dinner at the hotel restaurant. When the waiter brought our check, he said "So, where are you guys from? Obviously you're from the South by your accent." I must have said "y'all" one too many times.

Then have to explain that means Lower Alabama when they say I don't sound like a Californian

Actually, when you ordered grits to go with your chowder, it was a dead giveaway even WITHOUT the accent....

When I first came to California, people said I had a Midwestern accent.
Never knew there was such a thing!

SoMo, when a gentile Southern woman of fine bearing enters the room, people are bound to notice! It's just the natural order of things.
