Police say cop lied to hide gun fowl up
A 32-year-old police sergeant has confessed to falsely reporting being assaulted Monday by a gang in Totsuka Ward, Yokohama, to cover up his negligent discharge of his firearm, police said Friday.
According to the Kanagawa prefectural police, Tsutomu Hirabayashi was on duty at the Totsuka Station Higashi-Exit police box that day when he received information around 7:30 p.m. that a person had been spotted acting suspiciously.
When Hirabayashi arrived at the area where the suspect had been sighted, he drew his revolver, according to the police. While looking around, Hirabayashi was surprised by the sound of chickens flapping their wings when he shined his flashlight on their coop, and negligently discharged his sidearm, they added.
Hirabayashi then requested backup over his radio, the police said. When reinforcements arrived at the scene, Hirabayashi told them that he had fired a warning shot at a gang of four armed people in self-defense, the police said.
