This also brings up an interesting question. If we are married in a church and have a marriage license from the state, if you get divorced it is purely a state matter.
I have to claim ignorance on this, but why isn't there also a religiously sanctioned divorce of some sort, or is there one? Anybody know?

It depends on the religion, I suppose. I don't know how every faith handles the situation but the Catholic Church doesn't recognize a civil divorce. That is to say: you cannot get remarried in the RC church unless the union has been anulled under Church authority. Also, if you remarry (civilly) while still married in the eyes of the Church, you are considered to be a bigamist and are barred from partaking of any sacrements while you remain out of spec. I believe Orthodox Jews have a similar deal but am not certain of this.

There probably are religiously sanctioned
divorces, but religions do not follow God's laws anyway, they pretend they do according to their own interpretations. If the church has a 501c3 status with the state and the (IRS) then they can play ball with them, but the law probably will have the upper hand. Anytime you ask the goobernment for something, in this case a 501c3 status there are always strings attached. Besides we recycle everything except relationships, go figure, but your marriage mate farts under the sheets and that is grounds for divorce for sure. What ever happened to Until Death Do Us Part ?
