Lightbulb What Gauge Means

A unit of measure of the internal diameter of a shotgun barrel, determined by the number of spherical lead bullets of a diameter equal to that of the bore that are required to make one pound... According to Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary

The 410 does not follow this rule though.

That is because the 410 is actually the .410 caliber smooth bore. There are stranger things in this world of funny-named stuff. As an example, I have 3 36cal weapons, each of which takes a different size ball.

There's an exception to every rule

A&S......"I have 3 36cal weapons, each of which takes a different size ball."

Could be worse. You could have 10 .38 caliber weapons that each took a different diameter bullet.

.44 magnum is actually a .429 bore... .38 Special is actually a .357 nowhere near a magnum.
It's a cool little bit of trivia every gunguy oughtta know.

Ayup.

Just like a .30-30 is .308" diameter.

So is .30-06.

9mm is .355, unless you're talking about 9mm Makarov, which is a bit smaller, if I remember correctly.

Don't they just love to confuse us? [grin]

Oops! My bad!

You're absolutely right. That's what happens when I go on straight memory and don't go back to double-check my statements before hitting "Submit."
