LINDEN, New Jersey (AP) -- A police officer was drunk when his vehicle
crashed head-on into another car, killing himself and five other people, investigators said. Union County police Officer Edward C. Belvin's blood-alcohol level was 0.326, or more than three times New Jersey's legal limit, according to toxicology tests released Friday by the National Transportation Safety Board. County prosecutors placed the level even higher, at 0.351. Investigators said Belvin's Mercedes crossed a highway divider May 1 and crashed head-on into a car carrying five restaurant employees returning home from work. All six people were killed. The NTSB has not been able to determine how fast the Mercedes was traveling, but is examining its air bag equipment to try to determine the impact speed. It is rare but not unprecedented for the NTSB to investigate vehicle accidents with multiple fatalities.
