I stumbeled across this interesting piece of Aussie history.
A song we all know, isn't quite what we thought it to be, and did not originate in America. Enjoy: ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltzing_Matilda

thers been a few arguments over this one over time
it would be impossible to count how many US folkks come here and tell us about thers song and how we in Australia stole it just one of many things patented in the US that we have to pay for now as our patents and copyrights are never recognised by the US thers another version out there goings like this once a jolly lawyer from somewhre near the rio grand came to Australia to see what he could steal when he saw it was a honest place he stole the soul and heart of it and put it up for saaaale the rest gets a bit rude after that but its common that US companies patent stuff and names like billabong kangaroo, outback, so we have to pay fee's to use them we even had to pay to use the term "sydney olympics" to a lawyer in chigago who worked for Oprah as he registered it before we where allowed too by ICAN and as cases from australia aint heard in the US except if we go there thers little many companies here can do the US treats the taliban better in many ways and try being a Aussie getting a visa you have a easier time if your from somailia but hey thats politics and business |

Al i'da been in the main force myself if i was a tad older then
did not get to "play" until '74 but hey this aint the US people, we know ( or most do) its business's and such like George W and our "Free trade" deal we cant send you meat or anythiung really but US companies can come here grow thier own send it to the US as Australian Prime and then go broke every few years and not pay taxes here but clain tax credits in the US they are ripping you folks off as much as they rip us off here we have oil and gas here just we have to sell it to the US wholesale then buy it back retail free trade allright free for george and his mates they sit back laughing while 30 Million of thier own get put out of work and pay higher gas prices while the actual wholesale is going down via free trade just the middle men margins get bigger every year and we know who the middle man are one day we'll get parity until then theres a whole bunch of aussie still happy to host your visiting sailors and marines i'm one and theres plenty of others we remember the pacific in 43 44 and 45 so dont stress about the VN or business issues we signed on for the long haul with the US people not big business or politicians cheers jack |

"did not originate in America"? Who in the world would think this song is American?
A "swagman" by a "billabong", waiting for his "billie" to boil, carrying a "tucker bag", putting a "jumpbuck" in it, and being caught by the "stockman"? Oh yeah, those are all American terms. First time I heard that song, I had to get out a dictionary to figger out what they were talking about.![]()

Don't know much about Australia but I always wanted to see Ayers Rock. Kangaroo meat is good on pizza and I got drunk in Honk Kong during a break from the party in South East Asia with an Irish merchant marine and an Australian sailor from the HMAS Hobart. Their sense of humor and capacity for Guinness was impressive and their hospitality were much appreciated at the time. I just wish I remembered the last half of the evening.

Love the song and melody.
I have heard some rousing versions and melancholy versions in the movies. Simply beautiful no mater how it is presented. Here Dixie works the same way.

A shack, water, and a wood stove.
A good man can bring anything else that he needs on his back and shoulders. Assuming the "guv'mint" lets him. I want to go "there" for a while, sometime. Even though I grew up in something like it. Different critters, you see. Jack, I'd like to see the Aboriginals too. I know from (uncomfortable) personal experience that the "Abo's" aren't always looked upon with admiration by the typical Australian "Whitefella." I ain't got that problem. Those guys know good stuff.

When I first learned the song in school we were told it was an Australian song.

I hate it when my nation makes me feel ashamed. I am not easily given to hate and do not react well to shame. I call that an attribute.
I also find it a motivator.

Jack, I AM worrying about my own butt!
If "They" will do it to our allies "They" will do it to US! Why? We voted them in, therefore we must approve of what they do. Period. A simple assumption of superiority due to a popularity contest known as the "vote." Including the well meaning yet misguided SOB's that voted "them" in. Crap I think I just made another "list." Oh well, add it to the collection.

I, for one, do not recall having ever heard that "Waltzing Matilda" was, in any way, an "American" song.

All I know about it is that it made a beautiful sound track for the old movie "On the Beach", from the novel by Nevil Shute. About Australia in the fictional nuclear holocaust. Great movie. I recorded it just for the sound track. I've never heard the song ever referred to as anything but Australian.

i have known the song was Aussie since the 3rd grade. You Aussies are right about us tho we want to take credit for everything or be the best at everything. I would love to leave the U.S. and become an Aussie. Cheers Mates.
