Is the .30 Remington round the same as what's now known as 30-30? Specifically, will a modern 30-30 round cycle/fire in a Remington Model 8 marked .30 Remington?

The .30 Remington is a different cartridge than the .30-30 Winchester so no they're not interchangeable.
.30Rem is a rimless cartridge that is ballistically nearly identical to the .30-30 but the case dimensions are different. Check out this link for a little more info. http://www.chuckhawks.com/30_Rem.htm |

The .30 Remington and .30-30 Winchester are NOT the same. Do not try to use one in a rifle chambered for the other!
Back after the Great War (and even before), Remington and Winchester were in hot and heavy competition for the medium game rifle market and introduced a number of new cartriges aimed at deer hunters. These included the .25, .30, .32 and .35 Remington's and .25-35, .30-30, .32 WCF by Winchester. As a rule, the Winchester cartridges were rimmed and the Remington rimless along with other dimensional differences. All were somewhat similar in performance and very adequate deer but the only ones we see very often today are the .30-30 Winchester and .35 Remington. Although ammo for the others is still around, it is getting scarce. If you need it, buy it when you find it.

You can, however, use .30-30 reloading data to reload the .30 Remington.
