Default S&W SS trooper in 357

Shiny barrel, Hogue wraparound grips, 6" barrel.

Ser # AVZ4832
4
m686-1

All numbers on the frame inside the swivel above the hinge.

Any ideas on what I have here? Supposed to be 1980's manufacture. Last ones before everybody went to slabsides.

Can't believe I traded for a wheel gun, and a S&W at that!

Thanx

Well, you have a Model 686......The .357 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless.

Giving you a date of manufacture is a bit more difficult. The years from 1980-83 were transition years with a three letter serial prefix and a four digit number.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson lists all of the three -digit serial numbers from 1980 to 2000.....but there's no "AVZ" listed. They do list an AVB for 1987.....might that be what you have?

That 686 is a great L-frame S&W revolver. Good choice.

FYI a "Trooper" is a Colt revolver.

I really didn't choose it, it sorta chose me.

About an hour before I posted my question, a local fellow dropped by with it and asked if I had a 22 to trade for it.

I got the handgun and he walked out with a model 36 JC Higgins Semi-auto 22 rifle that is a sweetheart to shoot.

We were both happy.
