357 Auto? - The Firearms Forum

A buddy told me that S&W made an M&P in a 357 auto, and after looking, they really do. My question is what in the heck is it. I checked Midway for loaded ammo and they do not show it, nor does the Hodgdon web site for reloading data. If it is that hard to come by why would they offer such a thing? I know you may think I am crazy, but this rain will do it to the best of you, and with me it's easy. LOL

Are you referring to the .357Sig? If so, several makers offer that chambering.

Somewhere in the past I think there was a gun for that round made by Magnum Research ,I think they called it the AutoMag. It was a semiauto hand gun in 357 mag.

not 100% sure but the magmun research 357 used the same round as the 357 revolver. as did coonan arms both being a 357 mag. the 357 sig is a necked down 40 cal case with a 9mm bullet. it has almost 357mag like performance and is gaining converts. but look at a ballistics chart it's more like a 38 super . or as i just resently found out like a 7.62x25 tokarev . also a necked down round. so i took the long way around.... the bottom line is there are guns that shoot the 357 mag and guns that shhot the 357 sig both are different.

I am calling S&W today to find out for sure, but the web site shows 357 sig and 357 auto. I must be a kicking fool if it is a 357 magnum in an M&P. Thanks everyone.

Smith & Wesson doesn't want to advertise for SIG, so they call it ".357 Auto." Just like many gun makers don't use the "ACP" designation because the "C" stands for Colt.

But yes, the .357 M&P fires the .357 SIG round. It is NOT interchangeable with the rimmed .357 Magnum round. It's relatively new, so you may not be able to find load data in too many books.

You may just need to get a new book.

I can find plenty of load info. for the Sig, but they list the 357 sig and the 357 auto on the S&W page. I had planned to call them today, but the first day in two weeks with no rain meant lawn mowing.

Tony if you will go to the homepage of S&W and pick a caliber drop down you will see .357 auto. It is the 5th. one down.

According to the S&W customer service there is no .357 auto in reality, but a .357 Sig.. They just have it on the website as different calibers. Well again that a kick in the pants. LOL Can we say false advertising? I was in hopes that it was like the .44 Automag, but no such luck.

Mateba makes a semi automatic revolver in 357 magnum. Yes you read it right. The cylinder is turned automaticaly by recoil and not the pull of the trigger. It is truly a semi auto. It also is available in 44 Mag and 454 Casull.
