Default Older Uthaca 12ga double

I'm 65. I have been using my dad's gun since I was 12. He got it in the 1940's for doing some auto repair. I can't figure out what model or a value. It's an Uthaca double barrel, double trigger. Pointer dog engraved on it. Very faint now. It has two pins in front of the lever indicating the gun is cocked. Once fired, these pins drop down level. Haven't seen that on any website. It also has a medal release on the bottom of the forearm. Serial number 440---.

Anyone have any idea how old? I still shot it. Works fine.

Anyone?

Mike

You have a NID (New Ithaca Double) model made in 1927. As described it is a Grade I (Field or Hunting grade) gun.

It is 85 years old. If it is mechanically sound and tight, it should be safe to shoot. However, in 1927 field shotshells (low brass) averaged around 8000 psi and waterfowl shells (high brass) produced no more than 12500 psi. This gun was proofed at about 13000 to 14000 psi. Today almost all factory shotshells develop about 11500 psi (to reliably operate gas operated semi-auto shotguns) or 33% more pressure than most pre-WW II SxS double guns were designed to take a steady diet of.

If you are going to shoot it a lot, you might want to find a source of low pressure (light) loads.

Wow, that was fast. Thank you. Being 85 years old, is it worth very much? I was thinking of selling it to get a 20 gauge double for future hunting. I would like to know a ball park figure to sell it. Any ideas?

From Google or Yahoo, type in "firearms auctions" or similar words. You will find several big internet auction sites. Currently, at one you will find your shotgun, one grade better and in better shape. The auction has 3 more days to run, has 9 bids, and it is up to $350.00. I would expect it to fetch $600 to $800; but will be watching to see. I opine that your gun will likely fetch about 70% of what the mentioned gun goes for.

If you obtain some light field load ammo, you gun still appears to have a lot of life left in it; and will kick less than a 20 ga.

Hope this helps.

ITHACA, not Uthaca! It's right there on the gun!

I apologize. Sorry. Not sure why I spelled it wrong this time. I know it starts with an "I".
