.40 S&W and Ruger Carbine

I have been loading .40 S&W for a Sig 2340 and BHP
3.7 Clays under a 155 Hard Cast Lead bullet.
This has worked out just fine for me!

This weekend, I am picking up a Ruger Carbine in the same .40S&W.

Can I use my pistol reloads pretty much interchangeably?

I have been going on the light side for the pistols.
Lower velocity out of respect for the .40S&W and Hard cast Lead re: potential leading of the barrel.

For the carbine I think I might like a more "potent" round.
(Heavier ?? Faster ??)
(less concern about recoil and engaging relatively longer distance targets)

Might the higher velocity in a longer barrel tend to lead up more?
Do I need to go with jacketed?

What would you recommend.
( I do like Clays Clays but am not anal about it)

I would receommend either using one of three bullet types.

1) Hard Cast gas Checked
2) Copper jacketed
3) Copper plated

The gas check on the first one will help prevent leading which is caused mainly by the bullet base melting as it is pushed down the barrel by the hot propellant gases. As far as loads go, see if they have either Thomson Center Contender loads in your book or maybe some cowboy reloads for the 40 in a rifle.

As long as your loads are not super light, then they should be fine. However, the fun of the rifle is to soup it up a bit. The main thing you would want to look for is a slower burning powder to help fill up the bore. H110 and WW296 or 2400 come to mind. Good luck.

watch out for incipient seperation when RE-loading 40 S&W,It is REALLY prevelant in that caliber.Inspect ALL your brass around the base for stretch marks and such, AND if you can't size it, don't use it!!!
