Default Savage 99 cal. 30-30 win.

Today I was shown a Savage Model 99 in 30/30 Winchester Caliber. It had what appeared to be a 26" bbl. with no bluing at all Almost looked as if it was in the white, a reartang sight and no front sight, but did have a front dovetail.

I was only able to handle this rife for a short time under poor light.

To my knowledge Savage never chambered the 99 in 30/30?

I'll go back under with a magnifying glass under better light and get all the details.

There was a serial #30280.

Any ideas what it is?

The 30 / 30 was one of the least popular of the calibers with the most popular being the .300 Savage and the 250 / 3000 Savage.

The .308 Winchester and the .243 came later in production.

All were good guns. Much better than a model 94 Winchester. No hammer to mess with and a box magazine - most with ammo counters on the side.

No tubular magazines - which means that you CAN shoot Spire point bullets in the 30 / 30 Savage that you could not in the model 94.

A very good gun that is getting hard to find in good condition.

The pre 1955 (Model 99 Savage rifles) are worth $500 - $1000 depending on condition. You can be sure that what ever the gun shop is asking - that it is worth. Because they are not going to sell a $500 gun for $250
