I origonally posted this on RugerForum.com
I thought you guys might be interested as well. A couple of weeks back I did a deal to buy a Ruger SP101 22rimfire. To get it I have to: 1: be a financial and active member of a registered club that shoots a "recognised" discipline appropriate to this particular firearm. 2: apply to that club for licence support (form f1) 3: The f1 must (by law) be approved by the club committee, all of them, (ie, wait for committee meeting and hope I havn't pissed any of them off too badly). 4: After receiving my club support I can apply to the police for a licence. Police processing can take as long as 8 weeks. 5: When I have the police ok they will issue me with a "permit to purchase". This means I can now buy the gun, (not legal until now) 6: having purchased the gun I MUST take it directly to the police station where they will check that it is what I claimed and is safe. God help me if I got anything wrong because I WILL have to start over. 7: The police will now issue me with a licence to use that gun at that club. I may use it at other clubs but only in the disipline specified. I MAY NOT transport the gun to any place except a registered range or gunsmith unless I have a special permit, EVER, FOR ANY REASON. To carry a gun on my person off the range is a jail offense. 8: No handgun may have a barrel shorter than four inches. 9: To maintain my licence I must shoot in competition at my home club at least once every six weeks. The club is obliged to withdraw it's licence support if I fail in this, or it will face de-registration, (in other words be closed down). ALL handguns must be licenced seperately. This means that every gun has to go through the process. Each and every one of them, one at a time. Not finished yet!! read on. When the police are processing a gun they will check that WHOEVER lives with me is OK with it. If they say no, I won't get it!!! If I have been divorced within 2 yrs they will check with the ex, same as above. Some of the police checks are sensible. Things like a history of violence, or spending lots of time in the psych ward will stop me dead in my tracks, and so it should! But the rest of it, sheeeesh. The govenment is "anti" and has a lot more power that in the US. ALL semi-auto rifles and shotguns require a special permit that is damn near impossible to get. Military style semi-auto's are totally banned. 9ml semi-auto pistols are banned, (why 9ml I don't know) and all other semi's will most certinly go the same way. There is a lot of talk about "recreational" shooters being limited to a max calibre of .38 with MV max of 900fps. I believe this too will come to pass. All firearms must be stored in a safe when not in "legitimate" use. Ammo must be stored in a seperate safe, and they (the safes) must not share a common key. When I take out a gun licence I must sign a form that authorises the police to enter my home to check my compliance at any time, without a warrant. I swear to you that all of the above is as it is. Scary, isn't it? Robert. P.S. last night on TV we were shown a preview of a new antigun add campain that features a 16 year old boy concealing 5 semiautomatic pistols on his person, then walking around a mall. The message is obvious: "If I can do this then it is self evident that these guns are far too dangerous to be in the community. The campain organizers (financed by Gov't grants) state unequivicably that the aim is a total ban on semiautomatics WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTION. ![]() P.P.S I own a 357 Ruger revolver, A 410 shotgun, a BRNO .22 and a 6.5x55 (swede).

That is some scary stuff. I feel sorry for you. Not only are you not able to enjoy shooting and firearms in general, but it sounds like you're living under an over-controlling regime. I don't know how you guys live with that.
Unfortunately, it won't be too long before that kind of crap happens in America. |

Hello Swanshot,
I have a friend from Scotland who came to visit me for a few weeks. I had no idea how bad things were for those folks in the UK until he arrived. The first day of his visit, I took him to the local gun shop. He stood at the door and said that in the UK he couldn't even go in a gun shop without a license. He described the process to obtain a license much the same as you. We went in and he held his first real firearm, at 46 years of age. He was reluctant at first, but we spent about three hours in there just looking. (I bought some targets for us to use later.) On the days I had to go to work, I left Stuart a box of .22 bullets, my Marlin Golden 39A lever action and one of my revolvers. The man had a ball out in my back yard. I offered him larger caliber weapons, but he said he was more comfortable with the .22 when I was not there with him. We took an afternoon and did some target practice with my .357 magnum Ruger Security Six. He actually scored better than I. I boxed up the targets and sent them to him for Christmas one year. When I went over to visit him in Scotland, I saw his side of the story. He and his friends have fast draw competitions at their Country and Western Clubs. He carried me to a gun shop where they purchase these "weapons". Every gun in the shop is manufactured "For Blanks Only." We also visited an Outdoors store in Edinburg, where they had shotguns. I do no recall a new shotgun in the store, only used ones - expensive, used ones. They was more paper work with those shotguns than with all the papers I've ever filled out for weapons, purchase permits and my Conceal Carry Permit. I guess I said all this to say, "I know where you're coming from." I wish we could help you. If anything, your comments should inspire us to be more vigilant about our freedoms - thank you! BTW, I have a friend in South Elizabeth. Is that near you? Your Friend in Dixie, Sir Bug |

The nearest big city to South Elizabeth is Adelaid. Isn't that over near your west coast, in the south of Australia? Your Friend in Dixie, Sir Bug ps: The name here is Ronnie. |

Thanks for the warm welcome, I hope to bring a positive contribution to the forum. Meanwhile here is some good news concerning Applebee's restaurant and CCW's.

Hangfire, welcome to TFF!
I'm confused now on the Applebee's subject. Reading through the page you posted, I can't determine what the consensus is. If they are not posting signs, then we can continue to carry concealed handguns there. It sounds like they are anti-gun but will not be posting signs. Is this correct? I'm in San Antonio, by the way, so this is in my back yard. |

Thanks for the welcome '52!
It's my understanding that Applebee's at one point decided to ban CCW holders from entering their establishments. A boycott and letter writing campaign was started by pro Second Amendment folks. Next thing you know a "policy turn-around" was put into effect by the President of Applebee's. Signs stating "No CCW's allowed" have been taken down and CCW holders are once again welcome! Here is the letter from the President of Applebee's... ------------------------- "Thank you for your note. I have determined that my Applejam Applebee's restaurants will be consistent with our parent company's (Applebee's International) practice of not posting signs prohibiting licensed, concealed handguns. Therefore, in the Applejam of Texas' Applebee's restaurants, we will not post signs prohibiting licensed, concealed handguns." "I look forward to your continued patronage of your local Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. Sincerely, Frank DeAngelo" (president of Applebee's) -------------------------- Hope this helps! (Just goes to show the power of the pen$) ![]()
