Any Ruger savy folks? - The Firearms Forum

I was wondering what the "transfer Bar" is on Ruger Gp 100 revolvers.
Gallery of Guns lists that as a safty mechanism. I don't fully understand the function of it.

Transfer bar safety, allows the hammer to strike the firing pin only when the trigger is completely pressed.
Maybe they did it to pass the Kalifornia "Drop Test"
It dosen't make for a very smooth trigger put though.

I have a H&R Sportsman with a transfer bar.

It works just like a S&W; it keeps the hammer from hitting the firing pin(ruger) or primer (S&W) unless the trigger is pulled. You Cannot 'drop' the hammer on a loaded round.
Minimal effect on trigger pull, due, in both cases, to geometry. A legal necessity, to protect against BS lawsuits; i.e., I shot myself, because...
3 screw rugers work fine, without it, and they're single action! Load one, skip one, load four, cock and drop.
Really, an engineered safety devise for stupid shooters!

While the two revolvers (S&W and the Ruger GP) share the same feature of keeping the hammer from erroneously striking the firing pin if the gun is dropped, the S&W version blocks the hammer from falling with a piece of metal that is only removed by pulling the trigger, the Ruger system is different.

The Ruger system inserts a piece of metal between the hammer and the firing pin to transfer the blow of the hammer to the firing pin only when the trigger is pulled. The hammer has been made such that if it falls without the trasfer bar between it and the firing pin, it can not touch the firing pin.

S&W calls theirs a "Hammer Block" while Ruger calls theirs a "Transfer Bar" reflecting the differences between the S&W and the Ruger systems of protection.

I see.......keeps clumbsy gun owners in the clear........and the lawyers at bay.
I like it. not much need for that on a single action if you skip a round and only carry 5 shots..
