I have a Taurus 608, 8" ported barrel, holds 8 rounds....big enough to have a Red Dot Scope...I usually shoot .38 in it at the range... Fun to shoot but after about 100 or so rounds it gets H E A V Y!!!!!

Ruger Blackhawks can be goten in the low $200 range and are good hunting guns.

do you have a 1911? You can easily load it to outperform a 357 of similar length, especially if it has a fully supported barrel. Single actions have very slow lockwork, and a non-uniform gripping surface, making the double actions considerably easier to hit-with.

If you want real hunting performance, get a Contender, in 7mm TCU. blow out the neck of 223 cases to fit 7mm bullets. Hits harder at 200 yds than a .44 mag does at 100 yds. Very easy to use well, especially if you scope it.

The SB is not a 357, and it is an SA, with the slow hammer fall and the ton of bricks hammer impact and the plow handle grip problem of getting a different grip each time.

Why? For a lot less money I can get a spare barrel for the 1911, rechambered for the 460 Rowland, and have the same power as the .44,with much faster repeat hits, the option of a .22lr conversion unit, as well as many other calibers, concealed carry, ease of gunsmithing, and so on.

That would be like shooting while jumping on a pogo stick.

The question was about an inexpensive .357 mag for hunting.

I agree with the Ruger, but I prefer the Super Redhawk. The Super has a little more meat to it and I like the style of the redhawk more. I've never been a fan of the old west style. But you can't go wrong with a Ruger revolver in my opinion. I've got one with a 7 1/2" barrel that I carry on my hip whenever I go hunting.

In my state, Massachusetts, only revolvers are allowed during the handgun black bear season, cal. .357 or larger, although I know of no one who would tackle a bear with a .35 cal. handgun.
I vote for the Blackhawk, depending on the game to be hunted. I've owned a Blackhawk for over 30 years, shot many thousands of rounds through it , and have never experienced a problem.
