sitting here with a few olives and surfing the WEB, I came across a video on SUL Handgun Position. It doesn't explain the reasoning, any ideas?
The weapon ends up pointing down, assume it is a defensive position? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLDvGhNaKOk&NR=1

The only reason to take your point of aim off the threat is if something you don't want to shoot comes between you and the threat. This can be done without the awkward arm and wrist motions. I don't know what this guy is trying to teach.
I second the motion to 'screw that video'.

Yeah I'm thinking his actual audio would have helped.

My Federal Officer (old squad leader) friend referenced me to the following link. He said "in a MOUT operation we are stacked, so the 2nd position to the next to last man has their weapon positioned down. Of course the last guy is protecting the rear."

SUL for south was developed by the Chilean Army. It is a safe way to carry a pistol yet still be able to deploy quickly. The non shooting hand is placed flat against the chest and the pistol placed with the shooting hand grasping the pistol normally placed on top of the non shooting hand. This prevents “Flagging” your partners yet the pistol can be deployed quickly. It’s a good technique for “Active Shooter” situations where there may be many innocent passing closely to the officers.

Hmmm. good to know, glad someone did.
the music makes the video virtually useless.

Agentwil got it right. This is for military/police training when there are several soldiers, or LEO's, going into a house, or structure, that might become a bad situation. This allows them to draw their weapon and be ready.
