Secret 308 recipes

Anyone like to share their 308 recipes...preferralby using a 150gr. ohhh, i use a semi-auto for 308.

I have started reloading 308 and use varget. I want to try IMR 4895 or reloader 15....any thoughts. I shot my first reloads and am very impressed on my grouping...3-5 rds using 45gr, 46gr, 46.5gr. All within one inch to 1.5 inches of the bullseye.

I went shooting with gearhead the other day and I will be happy when I can shoot like him...all 5rds touching each other and the bulleye. Great job by the way.

I have several recipes for .308, but who is to say your rifle would even tolerate them, much less like them? Its kind of trial and error. Your rifle will let you know what it likes and dislikes. But, for conversation, mine's favorite load with a 150g bullet is: 150g Nosler Ballistic Tip, 42.3g Win 748, Rem case, CCI LR primer, O.A.L at 2.760. That will give .250" groups for me all day as long as I do my part. I cannot recall the load I had used with the 150g Hornady SSTs, but it was decent. It also likes the Nosler NJ4 168g BTHPs, but they usually hold around 3/8". The Fed GMM 168s (Sierra) open up to 1/2", with Black Hills slightly worse. (I would post the load datas for Fed GMM and Black Hills Match, but I would have to go outside to retrieve the data.)

I know everyone 'tweeks' their loads to their own liking. I am looking for different powders, primers, how many grains of that powder, etc. to just get an idea to change things or try new things. I posted a similar thread about 30-06 and found that I should step up my loads in the imr 4350. I did and found that my original trials were off, and now they are good.

Never hurts to double check or reconfirm your data.

I like shooting .308 Garands. My favorite load is 41.5gr of IMR or H 4895, with a 168gr Sierra and a WW primer, in a LC case.

It shoots better than I can.

depend on barrel length too hot of powder burns up before the bullet reaches the end you want a powder that burns slow enough to give that push all the way to the end but not long enough for a big muzzle flash or a lot of residue on the end of the barrel if it burns too quick then you are robbing yourself of distance trajectory and accuracy if your barrel is around 24 in or more try the winchester 780 20in or less try the imr4064

like the hotter faster burn for shorter barrels assures max velocity and distance the slower burning powders are still burning out the end after the bullets gone

When I develop a load for any given firearm, i start with powder on the fast end of the chart and only graduate slower to the powder that gives me the uniformity I want. I like the load characteristics of properly developed ammo with faster powders. IMR4064 in .30-06 W/ 150-168 gr bullets, Magnifico, buenissimo, couldnt ask for a better powder in this cartridge for this range of bullet weights...
