Nothing pisses me off more than these idiot gun owners in Socal. The only thing worst than the idiotic anti gun owners here in socal are the ones who give anti gun people all there ammunition to fuel there hatred. YES OWN GUNS! BUT DONT BE A IDIOT!
The only place to shoot here in palm springs other than the tiny over priced membership required range is blm land.
BLM land in the Coachella valley (that is the valley palm springs california is in) is a giant expanse of sand up against some hills 25 mins away from palm springs city center by freeway. Heres the problems with shooting out there that can cause some dangerous situations.
1. We have alot of motor heads that love to atv and 4 wheel up in those hills.
2. Alot of rocks to cause rickishays.
3. Oh yeah and a single road to get there. (i know a road whats the problem with that well... ill explain)

ok so let me explain. This stupid guy will go get a ak knock off or some crazy weapon that he or she thought looked cool and never shot before then will go out an bring all there trash out there and shoot everything and anything and refuse to clean up. Everything from tv's to beds to paint cand beer bottles its horribly trashed out there. They dont pick up there shell casings and ill post a pic someday on here next time i get a chance but you cant walk without stepping on one. And these people need an education seriously before they handle a firearm. My dad and I or my friends and I will be out there shooting and we witness this stuff so often that we barly shoot anymore because frankly with these yahoos its to dangerous. let me tell you some examples here:
once my dad and i were shooting into the side of the hill with the rifle from a distance and on the road behind us a truck is coming. which is fine but he pull up right behind us walks out of his truck and without pausing to look or load or anything pulls out a hugeeeee revolver and starts unloading onto trash behind us. He wasnt shooting at us but he was shooting parrell to the road and anyone driving wont see him and he wont see them because of the gigantic dips out there on the dirt road.
Another time the same thing happens kind of except these two guys are behind us shooting at the same hill as us but from behind us about 25 yards and 5 yards to the left so we can actually hear the rounds going by a zinging next to us.
Another time we were shooting nxt to these guys who had a nice ar and we were both shooting at targets at the hills. My dad and I see a atv start to drive into the hills and we stop shooting and point him out to the guys next to us who say 'oh...' and cont to shoot like omg isnt it bad enough that this atv drove up on us but u keep shooting omg! sorry these people just ruin guns for the rest of us and add more fuel to the anti gun fire

I live in Riverside county too.
I wont go to BLM land unless it is midweek and I am the only person there.

On the weekends I go to indoor ranges. Our local range kicks out yahoos every time I am there. You do something stupid, you're gone.
It is funny to watch them complain on their way out the door.

I've seen a lot of the same thing. People not using their heads.
I really hate to say this but in my experience some of the local LEO's that I've come in contact with are some of the worst offenders.
They've:

Shot cross range (not at the burm)

Gone down range without notifying other shooters

Placed targets (milk jugs) on the ground (not allowed because of the very high possibility of ricochets) at 25 yds on a 300 yd range when there is a 25/50 yard range 100 frickin feet to their right.

Refusing to open his bolt on a cold line (range rule). This cop was so dense that I had to tell him 3 times. The last time that I told him, I told him to his face in front of a crowd of about 20 people, that he was Fing clueless. I finally got fed up and had him run off. This was at a Sheriff Dept. range.

Most of the instances above occurred with one particular department that we allowed to use our private range. No other departments would allow them anywhere near their range. This is a dept. for a city of 200,000 people.

I was sitting in a tree stand on our property one morning and there isn't anyone that hunts really close to me but the area has several hunting clubs with leased land along our road. Anyway, I heard the strangest sound I've ever heard coming from across the river. I heard a crack, followed by a boom. What that tells me is that some IDIOT made an unsafe shot and the round actually passed very near me since I heard the sonic crack before the boom from the gun's muzzle. I just thanked God it didn't hit my house (wife and son were inside) which is on the hill above my stand. Some people don't need firearms but I don't know how you identify them... Maybe an IQ test?...

Why do you think for a minute this is limited to your area.
I have seen this in other areas many times over the years.
I witnessed it in my hometown in SW Wy and my brother and I tried to get a bunch of the guys who shoot all the time to come out and help us clean up. Guess who showed up! My brother and I, but we cleaned it up anyway and in two weeks it was as bad as before. WE don't go there to shoot any more.
I owned and operated an indoor range until Dec 22nd for 21 years and I have seen this kind of activity in my range as well. Not often and as soon as it was displayed the perps were immediately educated by the range officer. But some just don't learn and even with or after a word of wisdom they do it again. Then it is the door and BTW, do not come back, period.

As for police ranges, the ones I have visited and there are many, are usually shot to doll rags. Maybe it is because they get their things paid for by the feds or state and city, but for sure, they do not take good care of them or the equipment therein.
Before the flames begin I DO NOT MEAN ALL DEPARTMENTS, but more than a few that I have visited.

Also, some of the worst offenders at my range and some who have been asked to leave are LEOs. It is like they don't have to obey the same rules that you and I do.
But for the most part, shooters of any stripe are ethical, honest and considerate who will give the shirt off their back to anyone in need. I would rather spend my time in the company of fellow gun owners than any other group of people on earth.

And I am with you, the ones who break the rules will be corrected on the spot. You cannot afford to allow them to be unsafe while in your area.

Example, we had a person killed not long ago at one of the "favorite" shooting spots in the desert. He walked down range to set his targets without waiting for the all clear and never told anyone he was doing so. Once in a while God cleans out the gene pool, but it is bad for all shooters when the media gets wind of it and blows everything out of proportion.

My brother is a LEO firearms instructor.
Some years back we were at a CMP shoot at the range by his house.
Everyone was shooting an AR, and chamber flags were required.

We were spotting targets in a cement bunker 100 yards down range. The targets were 8 feet above us. One shot hit the berm in his lane, and the ricochet knocked out the lense of his glasses. The next weekend a round struck the 2x2 frame and must have hit a nail. Ricochet knocked out his lense again.

Glasses should be worn whenever shooting. And not only when behind the firearm.

I'll take a range nazi any day, and thank them when leaving safe and sound.

Art, my sons and I used to shoot at the N.I. sheriffs dept range on Weds. and Sats. when we had the chance. Probably ran into you a couple times and didn't know it.

Thought the range was well maintained and the range officer was always on the job. Didn't see anyone mess up without being called on it. Really appreciated the use of range and dept. targets. Met some fine people there. A very safe place to shoot. Almost all were enjoying themselves.

There are idiots everywhere. A guy I work with had a story to tell me that he thought was just so funny. His son (16) and his friends were walking a wooded area just outside of town. It's an area of a couple hundred acres at best with residential homes along the perimeter and a highway that runs through it. They were supposed to be squirrel hunting. His friends had a mix of shotguns and .22s. Well the son spotted a squirrel up in a tree, about 35-40' according to the proud father, and he sighted him up in the scope. He pulled the trigger and a thunderous report echoed through the woods and friends jumped by the surprise. They all looked at him and and asked what the hell he was shooting. He laughed and said 7mm mag. The squirrel was hit and vaporized. The kids thought it was funny. The dad thought it was funny as he still chuckled by merely repeating the story. I looked at him and said, "are freakin' crazy?" They had no regard for the safety of motorist, nearby residents, or for the basic ethics of hunting. To this day this guy thinks I'm the idiot for my views. So people are just born stupid and stay stupid.

Yep, you're describing the average twit that has no concept of physics or ethical hunting. Although that 7mm Mag round will likely be deformed dramatically by its expansion in the squirrel it will still reach some height and begin falling. On its fall it will only reach a critical velocity dictated by its deformed ballistic coefficient but it will still fall hard. A person hit by it could have a bruise or possibly be killed depending on where they are hit. A child could be killed easily if hit in the head. A person's vehicle could receive a serious dent. A person's house could receive roof damage. At my work the guys who work on our roof have found several handgun rounds in the past. They don't have much energy coming down but they can still penetrate and cause leaks, as well as damage to humans. MOST people have no clue...

I was normally there every Saturday.
I'm a chubby short guy with a pony tail, most times with a beard. I drove a 1989 white GMC S/15.
If I was shooting on the rifle line I would normally be seated at the bench closest to the airport. Most times I'd be shooting a Pearl White benchrest rifle with Louisiana Cajuns written in blood red on the butt end of the stock.
If I was shooting pistol, most times it would be at the plate racks. I always used a mosquito net to catch my brass.
I wasn't hard to miss.

It was/is a great place to shoot. The R.O.'s were a great bunch of guys.

My range has a three strike rule on small stuff,one strike on big stuff and thats that.I'm certified to be a range officer anywhere up here and I'm on the board at my club so do it right or do it elsewhere.

Can't blame ya for asking him that. I know up here in Dane Country, rifle hunting is illegal. Probably for this same reason. A bullet like a 7mm has the potential to travel off on down past a road, possibly hit someone house, who knows? That's what I was always taught. Whenever I shoot my pistol at my buddy's place, we aim away from the road into the side of a big, thick hill knowing that the bullets will stop when they hit the hill and won't ricochet.

This is also why when people deer hunt, they sit up in tree stands, so that they're aiming down toward the ground.
