I'm almost officially in the Army. I go to MEPs and get sworn in on Tuesday. I can't wait. Still not entirely sure on what I want to do though.

Good luck with your new career. IO was a MM in the Navy but have to say the way to go is in Intel. My youngest is in the intel field in the USAF and loves it. It has it;s pitfalls being a high stress field but it is aa field we are depending on more and more. Second field I say is avionics. Myself, I chose Mm due to be very mechanical and my high math ability so went with the nuclear MM route.
One piece of advice is get what you want in WRITING because a recruiter will "lead" you astray as to telling you the "full" truth! BTDT!!!

Best of luck to you. I started basic 43 years ago this month. Where does the time go?? Look for a MOS that has civilian applications.

Well, I learned that there are no more Option 40s left for this year. And the only thing available at the moment that isn't being a cook is Infantry, so when I go TO MEPs I'm going to look again and see if I can't get something else. But if I go 11X then I leave Aug 21st.

You should already have your job before you go to meps. Meps is the last step before they ship you off. Also just remember than meps is not a given no matter how good of shape you are in.
When I went in, in 1995 I had to go to meps 19 times to get in. That was over 6 months. I had to get waivers, my medical records had to go to review boards 6 or 7 times. They failed me for a wrist surgery, a cut on my finger, surgery under my left arm, high arches, flat feet, hearing loss, and who knows what. What ever you choose to do just remember you might not be in the military the rest of your life. So look at the job market and choose something you like that is going to transfer to civilian life. If it were me I would go the IT, MP, intel, EOD, Medical equipment repair. I was a heavy equipment operator (62Echo) and a Vet tech (91Tango, now 68Tango) The vet tech while fun didn't translate into a good civilian job. If you are an MP you will always have a job, Intel FBI, CIA, DOD all need intel people all the time. Doctors are not going away anytime soon and they all use medical equipment. You get to fix things in a air condition office that is clean and well lit. Hello doctors and Nurses (My wife is a nurse) and well nurses are FUN if you know what I mean. |

It's official, I am now an enlisted member of the United States Army. My ship out date is August 21st to Fort Benning for BCT. I would just like to take a moment and say thank you to everyone for their support and to thank those that served before me. It's an honor to share the title of U.S. Soldier with you.
