Default comparable to .223

He all it's rik again, got another question.

what other round/calibur would be comparable to a .223? I really like that the .223 doesn't have much kick, but it packs a bit of a punch. I would like something that is percise, and relatively cheap to shoot, which .223 is compared to some.

any ideas would help

Hi rik

I thought of a couple right away until you said the part about cheap to shoot. That knocks the others out and leaves the 7.62x39

If you had not specified cheap to shoot I would have said the 22-250. it packs more munch than the 223 and is accurate. THere are others as well. 220 ect, ect,

One of the reasons the .223 is so popular is the $$$ factor

I would have to agree. The .223 is usually somewhere around 1350 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, where the 7.62x39 is usually around 1470 ft-lbs. So the 7.62x39 packs a slightly harder punch, but is still very manageable.

Not to mention that you'll find firearms that fire 7.62x39 much cheaper than .223.

In the "light recoil, accurate & cheap" area, .223 is your best bet.

The 7.62x39 has light recoil and is cheap, but nowhere near as accurate as .223.

There are a lot of other 22 caliber rounds out there that have light recoil and are accurate, but they're pretty expen$ive.

ballistically the 22-250 beats the doo doo out of a .223 form what I have read, shoots a little hotter a little faster etc.
won't be cheaper for a while yet, as you can get 14 million .223 rounds on reserve for a nickel a piece

I was exagerating a little
and yes I have seen it for $0.05 a piece, that was if you bought over 50,000 rounds, it was from an old website, before gun sales online were as moderated, it was a russian surplus store, that sold everything including jets and tanks.

Cheaper than dirt has the following:

Product Description: Ammo .223 SS109, 62g 20-Rd Box Military Penetrator FMJ Brass
Catalog Item #: AMM-202 Mfg Item #: AM1106

For $4.07 per box or about $0.20 per round

They also have this:

Product Description: Ammo .223 62gr Hollow Pt 20-Rd Box Nickel Steel Case 20-Rd Bx
Catalog Item #: AMM-228 Mfg Item #: AMM228

For $2.89 a box or about $0.145 per round (This is Russian)

Then we have this in 7.62x39 surplus

Product Description: Ammo 7.62x39 FMJ 700-Rd Tin FMJ 122gr Non-Corr Sealed Tin
Catalog Item #: AMM-637 Mfg Item #: AMM637

For $64.97 or $0.093 per round.

Good luck in your choice. The only thing that is not mentioned here is the difference in down range energy. The .223 at 200 yrds has an energy of 709 ft/lbs vs the 7.62x39 which has 1800 ft.lbs.

Good luck in your choice. I would opt for the .223.
