They were definately playing it up. I have shot one and it kicked no more than the .480 Rugers I have shot. Actually it felt like less because the Super Blackhawks I shot had wood grips.

They gotta be hamming it. I've have the 460 and honestly the 500 ain't all that much bigger of a cartridge...UNLESS that bigger bullet makes a difference? I've only shot the Hornady 200 gr SST round. 2200 fps.

I shot the 500 grain Corbon hard cast out of the .500. I know heavier bullets increase felt recoil, but I doubt they do to that extent.

Yeah, they even have an "Alaskan Model" with a 2 1/2" Brl. Haven't shot that one, but I bet it is a little tough as i dont believe it is ported to the extent that the .500 S&W is.

I am a Smith man myself. For revolvers anyway. I won't touch their autoloaders.

Well...i've got the 460 and i will admit its a VERY accurate gun. I seem to be able to hit targets better with this one at long ranges better than any other pistol i own.... so i cannot argue with Smith and Wesson Revolvers. Its just that the Ruger 44mag that i have fits my hand so darn good... its hard not to love them Rugers!!!

I go to youtube a lot for the shooting videos. I especially like the ones where you see bullets striking reactive targets. Well, those and the AR/AK bumpfire videos. :P

Well you can call me old & weak because the first two rounds I fired from the 2 1/2 inch S&W 500 was all that I will ever fire. If I need that much stopping power and the 44 mag / 45 ACP or the 357 mag can't get the job done I have rifles and shotguns.
The 500 I shot dang near broke my wrist was sore for three or four days!!!!

Huh... i guess those heavier bullets make for more recoil? Well its good to know i don't have to buy a bigger gun to get more zing....

I remember being taken to a range in the US many years ago to shoot a very powerful handgun, while on the way to the airport. Sadly I dont recall the calibre, but my hand was still hurting when I landed in London!

I do remember it was a necked cartridge out of a single shot, Thompson Contender I think.

Yeah, those Thompson single shots chambered for rifle cartridges are pretty brutal considering that back 25+ years ago they were not ported...or at least the one i shot. The very first pistol i shot was one of them Thompsons chambered for one of the big 30s... i can't remember if it was .300 win mag or what but it discouraged me from shooting for quite some time after that.
