Default What a difference 40 years makes

At the funeral today I ran into my employer from 1958 to 1967. We worked side by side for those nine years. Neither of us recognized the other. I was talking to a mutual friend when he told me who it was with him. From a vigorous 40 year old man with coal black hair he was a small stooped semi bald old codger about 80. Of course I am a youthful looking handsome fellow.
The young 20 ish intern that I trained in the 60's was a shuffling bloated old man.

10th year reunion; you recognize everyone
20 year reunion; you sort of recognize some people
30 year reunion; you recognize no one and don't have a clue what the hell they are talking about
40th; you just find a table and drink with strangers

Why is it in my mind's eye, I still look 35 but in the mirror I look 70?

Why is that more and more, I see my dad in my actions?

Why is it that when I get up in the morning, I don't spring out of bed like a young gazelle but more like an elderly hippo?

But, know what? I'm tickled to be up and about every morning and thankful for all of the good things that have happened to me.

And I don't care for the alternative

I remember meeting an old guy when I was around 25, in his 50s or so and still scratching a living. I remember saying to the guy with me that there was no way I would end up like him.

Well you can imagine my surprise...

Time is our unforgiving enemy. Fight him if you will, but he will win.

True, Tranter, but age and cunning often will out over youth and inexperience.

Very true, Pistol.

Still one's kids still don't get it, that is until they themselves pass about forty. Three of mine are now past that point and each has finally agreed on that specific point. The two younger (25 & 35) ones still think they know a whole lot more than anyone else.

I've wondered for years whether they would ever be anything but our babies. I will have to say, probably not. Even the fifty year old still comes to Daddy with questions and when panicked into needing help.

On the other hand, I do think we as parents do eventually enter into that place where wisdom is finally recognized.....

Quite so Pistol. We have those youngsters exactly where they want us to be.

I will take the age with the smarts that go with it than to be young and dumb again like I was.

Old age and treachery beats youth and skill any day

A young bull and a old bull was standing in the pasture.

The young bull said to the old bull, let's run down there and have some fun with a couple of those heifers and the old bull said let's walk down there and have fun with all those heifers.

I had a woman walk up to me yesterday, a real hottie, and said - I know I know you.

I was hesitant, because of my past, and I told her my name. She said well my name is Abby and my maiden name is so and so. I finished the sentence and told her that I sat at her lunch table when I was in 10th grade in high school.

The body was the same as it was 30 years ago, but the hair color and the face had changed completely. I stayed the same!
