Default Do you know?

Gun trivia, test question, it will be interesting to see who can answer it.

As a young trainee I found a small pocket about 1.5" square with a little flap on my rifle sling. I asked what it was for?

Who here knows the answer..

In Tranter's case, it may well be in the days of the Brown Bess, or at least the Martini-Henry, Delta. ::::ducking::::

I thought I saw a pouch in a surplus store with earplugs a while back. It was kind of a random handful of guesses though, I admit!

Funny that a lot of the replies were kind of in the gutter first thing!

I shall give you the same prize I used to give my kids when they were young. Given the distance you will have to find someone to officiate. Its a well earned pat on the head!

Then you're not as old as Pistol.

The first command Pistol heard in basic started with, "Archers!"

Actually, we were trained with crossbows, Delta. Much more efficient than a bow. At least young whippersnappers like you got to start off with Springfield '73 trapdoors.

Actually, the crossbow was not as efficient and deadly as the long bow. You youngsters were not willing to train before being brought into the ranks, so we had to find someting simple enough that even you could at least make noise at the enemy.

Actually while our longbows had a slightly lesser range they could be fired much more quickly. In battlefield tests the longbow proved more effective than the crossbow.

The drawback, if you will excuse the pun, is the English longbow took practice whereas the cross bow required very little skill to use. Thus it was much better suited to the European.

The recurve bows of the east were, I believe better than both. I love this stuff....

Pops
They had longbows when Pops was a recruit? And here I thought in those days they were still using slings with round rocks as ranged weapons, not to mention spears . . . with folsom points of course.

Quite true, Tranter. The English longbow was arguably the most deadly projectile weapon ever developed before gunpowder weapons with rifled barrels appeared on the scene in the 18th century. During the 100 Years War with France--at the battles of Crecy, Portiers, and Agincourt--the peasant longbowmen of England utterly decimated the flower of French knighthood. Indeed, the French later ordered that any English longbowmen captured were to have their thumbs cut off so as to prevent them from ever using the weapon again. The problem with the longbow though was twofold. First, it took virtually a lifetime to learn its use; and second, the supply of yew wood for the bows gradually disappeared because of overharvesting, much like the supply of English oak that the English used for shipbuilding. It is interesting to note though, that King Richard I (Richard the Lion Heart) was killed while laying siege to castle of Chalus-Chabrol in France . . . by a crossbow bolt through the throat.

So the crossbow was the SMG of that era....
