Default History Channel just showed a 1911 with "Melonite" coating...

The history channel is doing a special on Salt. I guess they have a coating that involves salt thats called Melonite? They are saying that the inside of a gun barrel coated with this stuff makes it run cooler because it reduces friction?

Anyone ever heard of this coating before? I have heard about them freezing metal and other stuff down to near zero to allign the molecules but i have not heard of this coating before...

I think that a Melonite is actually an alien life form from a planet that looks much like a cantaloupe or other melon like fruit.

Melonite is a telluride of nickel; it is a metallic mineral. Its chemical formula is NiTe2. It is opaque and white to reddish-white in color, oxidizing in air to a brown tarnish.

It was first described from the Melones and Stanislaus mine in Calaveras County, California in 1866.

Melonite occurs as trigonal crystals, which cleave in a (0001) direction. It has a specific gravity of 7.72 and a hardness of 1-1.5 (very soft).

In the metal finishing industry, Melonite is a trademark referring to a molten salt bath nitrocarburizing process, similar to Tenifer. This process can be applied to steels to increase corrosion and abrasion resistance, and improve other surface properties.

Alpo beat me to the post.

Melonite the the proprietary metal treatment has no relation to the mineral. The treatment is offered in several configurations in the USA. It and Tennifer are very similar. In fact I think I remember reading a post by a S&W or Walther USA senior engineer that they were in fact the same process with different names. Today, I seem to be finding that Tennifer still uses molten Cyanide and Melonite does not because of EPA restrictions.

At the moment, I do not have time do do in depth research. There is often more than one way to do a job and get the same results. Both seem to be equivalent processes as far as results are concerned, regardless of chemistry.

Any idea who does this finishing on guns?

Didn't somebody on this forum say something about Glock discontinuing their tennifer finish? Seems like i remember something said about it?

OR...
How to present it.

It's all about presentation.

I'd know all about it, too, except that Comcast dropped the History Channel from the basic cable service, apparently.

You are sure right to check the History Channel, GN -

I remember when Hidalgo (the movie) came out.
The History Channel did a piece on it, concluding that there was no basis for the claim that a mustang beat the Arabs in an endurance race.

But the Cavalry Journal said it was true -

So who was the authority that the History Channel believed?
The Long Riders association, a group dedicated to endurance riding.
They denied it ever happened.
Who runs the Long Riders?
A moslem.

No chance of any conflict of interest there, no-sir-eee!

OH -
I tried coating my 1911 with Watermellon juice -
I don't know if it operated cooler or not, but the stickiness caused my grip to improve -
