Default .17 cal

Hi all,

I have gotten some great luck with information site today. I am new here and the advise is refreshing.

Here is a rifle question:

I have a rifle that I got from my father a number of years but don"t shoot it much because I can't find ammo. It is a .17 cal but it is not even listed on the barrel. You have to take a 223 case and neck it down to .17. I don't have the skills to reload this round. It is an incredible rifle and shoots very true. The only markings on it are L461, NO.98XXX, and what looks like to be a lions head. one of the smoothest actions I have ever encountered. If you have any info I would love to hear from you

Thanks

L461 sounds like Sako to me. They used the L461 action in the Sako Vixen

That rifle is a H&R Model 317 Ultra Wildcat.

It was available with the Sako L461 action in 17-223, from 1968 thru 1971.

Here's an article with more info.

Thanks, GunHugger, that explains quite nicely why it ''sounded like'' Sako but didn't quite look like one.

Not that I would ever sell this rifle but what is it's worth? Thanks for the info by the way. I have been wondering about it for some time what this thing is. I need to start learning to reload at a advanced level. I love this rifle but the scope sucks.

Thank you so much for the info. I really thought the rifle would have had more value. It is a wonderful looking piece and shoots great. As said before, I would never sell it. Again, thank you!

The Bookbook is just a "guide" to gun values.

You never know what that rifle might bring on one of the big online gun auction sites. It's rare, made well and in a Wildcat caliber, it might do real well.
