It was a Gewehr (Rifle) Model 1898, as issued in WWI. The original barrel would have been 29.13" with a nearly full length stock and bayonet attachment. The barrel is of average weight. Valentin Christoph Schilling was a contractor to the German government, making revolvers and rifles.
It is very likely that your gun was altered or "sporterized" to some extent and if the barrel is not original, it is almost certainly not 8x57JS as it would have been originally.
