Default Winchester 1895 question

I recently was given a Winchester Model 1895. The markings under the trigger guard are 6797. Is this the serial and date of manufacture? The rifle is in very good unmolested condition. It also has a sight mounted way back on the stock. A round adjustable occular piece that aligns your eye instantly with the barrel sights. Anybody know if this was stock?

If you mean like this

that's called a "tang sight". That would not be, as far as I know, stock on any Winchester, but it was certainly a popular addition. Like putting a sling or a scope on a modern rifle. Might not come that way, but lots of folks do it as soon as they get the gun.

That's the serial number, indicates it was made in 1898. What caliber is it?

Tang sight, thank you. Its very similar to what you have in the photo.

And as far as the serial number goes, my research shows it was made in 1897. 1897 serial numbers went from 5716 to 7814.

Its stamped 30 US.

30 US is 30/40 Krag. First smokeless US military cartridge. Still loaded by Remington and Winchester both (probably others, also), so ammo is out there. Not very common, though.

Your research is flawed. Winchester Model 1895 serial number 6797 was manufactured on February 21st, 1898. The correct serial number range for the year 1897 was 2784 - 5734. If you still have doubts, you can always contact the Cody Firearms Museum and order a factory letter.

For those that are interested, my friends (and fellow WACA Board of Directors members) Ed Lewis and Rob Kassab are co-writing a brand new reference book about the Model 1895. I recently provided them with a copy of the complete Polishing Room serialization records, and those records cover the entire production run. The book will have complete and accurate serialization (date of manufacture) tables in it.

If you have a price in mind, here and opther gun forums is a way to start. IF you do not have a price in mind and want to see how they are/have been selling; go to (take spaces out between words being TFF will put a * in place of the letters due tto the site having a forum that is not well liked by many) www.*********.com which is :
NOT ALLOWED ON THIS FORUM . com
and
www.auctionarms.com

These 2 gun auction sites will give a good idea as to hpow they are selling and have sold in the past.
IMHO I would list it on this forum and others first.
