Hi everyone
I am new to this forum.
I have been reloading for a short time and still have some newbie questions.
Please don't laugh (too loudly)
I have been using corn cob media (green) and wanted to try the walnuts.
This stuff is red and discolors the cases.
Is this normal?
The corn made the cases shiny--Is the walnuts supposed to do the same thing?

The corn is used to clean lightly dirty brass such as once fired brass.

The walnut is used to clean dirtier brass.

My personal favorite is to use a 1/2 corn and 1/2 walnut mix with Flitz tumbling media additive.

This makes brass better than new.

I've never had a problem with walnut shell turning my brass color. Where are you getting your media? If you get media from an abrasives supply shop for "sand" blasting, it might have rouge mixed in with it. I have heard of this, but never experienced it.

thanks for the replies guys.
I bought the media in a shooting store.
It must have some kind of polishing compouind mixed in it like the rouge suggested above.
It's just that it turns my fingers red when I am taking out the cases.
Other wise it works fine.

I use the half walnut/half corncob mix also. Works well for me.

You can clean the media by going outside and pouring it from one bucket to another a couple of times. The dirt/dust will drift away in the wind while the heavier media will drop straight down into the bucket. If you tumble a lot it will last longer.

The answers above are all great and true-I use straight walnut media from RCBS as I've had the best results with dirtier brass. RCBS also sells packets of polishing compound (a fine white powder-comes with 5 packets at once) and I've found this the best of the bunch-and is very clean to work with.
