Default Geocaching, who does it?

Recently got into it and even got something out of it...while giving something up.

I might get into it, just find an old ammo can or water tight container and find some stuff and a couple geocoins.

My brother and his wife are big-time fans of geocaching. I have not tried it yet.

Yeah, the wife and I go out once in a while although we've been negligent as of late. I built a removable, adjustable PC stand for the Jeep. We run DeLorme TOPO program on a Dell laptop and look for the caches way out. We've done a few in close but we figure if it "ain't worth a Jeep ride" it is not worth looking for.
We really need to get a hand held device to supplement the PC as I just about broke my neck trying to follow a non established trail getting to a set of coordinates.

Ya I go out to find them myself. I have a little over 600 finds and about 25 hides. It can be a lot of fun! My kids really like getting out there and finding caches.

Oh.... I get it! You want me to use google. All I know is that, if you gave me a bucket of cache I still wouldn't take a geo.

Garmin makes a small hand held unit called ETREX, check it out! I love mine! It goes with me anytime I'm in the woods.

I have a little over 600 finds and about 25 hides. I fracked-up my first skinning attempt and nicked the scent gland! It was a month before anyone would let me on the elevator! Ruint a perfectly good hide, too!

I have always wanted to try it, but I have not yet bought a GPS unit. Also, so far I haven't been able to talk any of my friends into trying it with me, and it just seems like one of those things that wouldn't be as much fun alone.

You're right. The banter and strategy in finding a well stashed cache is the fun.

Basically people hide things and put the locations online in like latitude and longitude and you gotta use your GPS to find them. Generally speaking, I believe, you leave something in place of what you find.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, or feel free to add some details

Yes people hid a container with trade items in it. They could be anything that is not prohibited in the guidelines on geocaching.com. Usually it is just a bunch of dollar store stuff and toys but sometime there is actually cash or other cool things. If you take something you should leave something as good as, if not better, than you took. The best part of it is getting out of the house and doing something. I like to hike so geocaching gives me another reason to be out on the trail. Some of the hides are really challenging too. It really is a lot of fun especially if you go with some other people or your family.

Right......I'll throw this in for what it is worth. You really don't have to take anything or leave anything. Always log into the log book, tell what you exchange.

I use a garmin Etrex Legend for hunting and geocaching. I got mine pretty cheap because there was a rebate at the time. You can get them in stores for about 150 bucks and less online. The Legend is a good starter model but the Garmin 60csx is an awesome GPS. I would skip the much cheaper Etrex yellow. It is not a bad gps but for just a few bucks more for the Legend you get a lot more. The yellow doesn't have any maps and you must hand enter the waypoints. The Legend has a base map with major roads, travel info, and other neat things that the yellow doesn't have. You can also download up to 500 waypoints to the Legend with the provided cable. No more hand entering coordinates! If you get into geocaching you might want to also get the free program called GSAK. It makes organizing and downloading waypoints into the gps easier. If you really like geocaching become a premium member and take advantage of the services they offer. It is not expensive and for the serious cacher it is money well spent. If ya have any questions bout geocaching just ask me and I'll try to help you out.
