Default OMG Ammo!!

I stopped at my local sporting goods store for some bobbers and fishing supplies, checked the guns and ammo like I always do.

THE AMMO IS FULLY STOCKED!

The gun case is FULL. What's going on???? I am kind of shocked, as I discovered the elusive .380s right there on the shelf--a whole case of them. There were hundreds of bricks of .22s in two brands. All the calibers that have been missing for six months are suddenly there!

The guy said that they've always had a decent supply of ammo these past months, but that's not what I have seen! I've walked in and back out again numerous times with nothing.

Yes, lots of .45s in there--five different brands!

I noticed that the black guns are filling the shelves again at my normal gun shops. Also, ammo is becoming more plentiful. The stockpiling and panic buying seems to be slowing.

Funny thing, we didn't have a shortage here, and only one place to buy it in town.

I bought 200 rounds, enough for concealed carry class if I ever get my gun back from Smith & Wesson........

P.S. The price was the same as it was back in November, too.

Ammo is still a bit thin around here, but quite as bad as it was. I have noticed that gun prices are going back down fairly rapidly and the numbers of ARs and AKs are going back up. Maybe the "shortage" is easing.

I still find the ammo situation very strange, as if there's some more to it that we don't know.

I have fished walleye and Northern pike my entire life, but these past few years are all largemouth bass and panfish. I could never tire of fishing or shooting sports.

Just wondered. Not much in the way of pike or walleye down here. A friend and I caught over 40 nice crappie one day last week. Good Luck fishing.

Local WM had a value pack of WWB 40S&W, not much else and no rimfire. Today.

we have been ripping the sand bass and striper a new one here in tejas. My uncle and someother family members live around whitney Tx and have been taking 75 plus crappies and sand bass from aquilla lake every trip.

Sorry bout the thread hi-jack.... Ammo is showing its elusive face again around here as well. I scored 4000 primers just last week and the prices werent all that bad either... maybe there is an approaching end to this madness...

I have to respectfully disagree. What we saw with ammo and firearms is exactly the same thing that happens with any good when a perceived need spikes.

When gas prices spiked after Hurricane Katrina and supplies fell a little, gas was over-purchased and stockpiled. Consequently, a large number of stations ran out. I saw folks filling numerous 5-gallon containers at almost every station. They caused the shortage...

When this swine flu BS was announced, drug stores ran out of hand sanitizer.

When power is affected over a large area in the winter Kerosene and Kersene heaters sell out.

I don't think there's anything more to the ammo and firearms situation than a massive stockpiling and opportunity buying spree that went on for about 6 months. We're catching up now...

I believe the truth will be shown when the last quarter's sales figures for firearms are released. I believe it will be hilarious comparing 2007's 4th quarter to 2008's 4th quarter!

Don't know if this has been brought up in other threads but I thought htis had to do with the shortage.

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=6322396

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gun owners are watching a Utah congressman's bill with interest in the hopes this spring's supply-and-demand issue doesn't make a comeback.

In March, the Department of Defense stopped re-selling spent shell casings to be reloaded and resold to the commercial market.

"Instead of selling the spent ammunition to commercial reloaders, that spent brass had to be shredded or crushed first," explains Charles Hardy, public policy director for Gun Owners of Utah (GO Utah).

Four days later, the Defense Logistics Agency issued a news release saying it was reversing that decision after a review.

Regardless of how the decision came about, those four days created a virtual run on ammo. According to Hardy, "this change was made, and didn't require any congressional review whatsoever, didn't require any public hearings. It was a unilateral decision that just happened overnight."

Jason Chaffetz is introducing a bill that would make sure there is a check and balance on a situation like this, in case there is a next time.

Its legislation that Hardy and other gun enthusiasts will be watching carefully.

"I think how the bill is received," he says, "is going to be a little bit of a litmus test for how the current democratically-controlled congress and how the Obama administration view the individual right to keep and bear arms."

Whether it's accurate or not, Hardy says there is a perception out there that the new administration wants to tighten gun controls, and the four days in March only exacerbated the perception.

Chaffetz describes what happened last month as a form of back-door gun control. "They were trying to drive up the price of ammunition, thinking there would be less ammunition sold," he said.

The Department of Defense usually sells over 100 million used shell casings a year for reloading and resale to the public.

That ruling by the DoD was quickly reversed Double Deuce. I don't believe that's the cause for the shortage by itself. What that ruling did do was to scare even more people. I suppose that caused a further spike in demand. GeorgiaArms.com posted a big stink about the DoD's ruling for a short time until the ruling was reversed. Georgia Arms actually uses spent brass purchased from the DoD to reload some of their ammo offerings.

I suspect, as stated above, that the shortages were due to ammo stockpiling and also speculation. Speculation comes from greedy arseholes attempting to hoard ammo and sell it for a higher price at a future date. That's EXACTLY what caused our oil and gas costs to increase as well. Speculators in the commodities market bought oil at exorbitant prices expecting to sell it at a higher future value. It didn't work out for them either...

Yeah I don't think that was the only cause but it did have an influence on the situation, just like you said it got people scared so they bought more then other people tried to take advantage of the situation which made it worse.
