Can my son as long as he is on the property have a pistol or long gun on him without breaking the law? I live in rhode Island on a 150 acre farm. We have problems with foxes and coyotes and he wants to carry the .45 i got for him.

This is FEDERAL regulation only. Your local laws may be different.

12Guage,
I lived in Warwick and North Kingstown for 5 years. I did not think that RI even had 150 acres in the whole state I bought a few Knives from a fella named William McHenry who owned a "ranch" in Wyoming - RI that is To answer your question - I believe that he can carry and use a weapon, as long as he stays on your property.

As stated earlier, you need to check local as well as Fed law. Your township/city may have a law not allowing anyone to discharge the gun. Sounds stupid but he may be able to carry it lawfully but will get in trouble if he fires it.

No I haven't, what town is it in?
I lived there 5 years but really didn't get around RI that much. I worked in Cranston at the USAR Center and mostly went from home to work and back home, and every once in a while to the Commissary in Newport.

The Rhode Island code is very nicely organized, though somewhat archaic by my lights (and my Constitutional Law professor said I was in the wrong century!); but here's the section under "criminal offenses" entitled, "weapons":
http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statute...1-47/INDEX.HTM You didn't mention the son's age, but here's a code section dealing with that: http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statute...7/11-47-33.HTM And as to carrying on your own land or where you live ("dwelling"): http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statute...47/11-47-8.HTM These aren't necessarily all the laws dealing with this issue, so I suggest you contact a local attorney for a more definitive answer. I'm not an attorney in Rhode Island, only in Virginia and the United States.
