The other day I was shooting with a friend of mine and he pulled out an old box of Black Talon ammo in .40 cal. This of course started the talk about the ammo when it was available and all the propaganda created by the media that ultimately stopped the production of this ammo and the Black Rhino ammo that was soon to follow. It was such an interesting design and so my question to everyone here is what ammo is available today that is close to or the same design as Black Talon?

I believe that Winchesters PDX1 is their new version of the Black Tallon. If I'm mistaken in this, then someone will along in a few to correct me, and inform us both!

I will have to take a look. If they named it the PDX1 in the first place I wonder if it would have gotton so much hype from the libs? |

I believe after they stopped selling Black Talon the joke was the SXT in Winchester Ranger SXT stood for Same eXact Thing. It was Black Talon minus the black coat.

The way I heard it, Winchester stopped making the Black Tallon brand because folks were walking into gun stores and asking for Black Fellon ammo.

I still have a couple boxes of the Black Talon in 9mm, but I also have some of the Rangers. They seem to shoot the same, penetrate the same, and expand the same. One of the best SD bullets I can think of.

I have several boxes of Black Talon's and their replacement, SXT's. To me the only difference is that there is no black tip on the SXT round. I have seen Black Talons offered for sale at outrageous prices, what a joke.

I was told that Black Talon became Ranger and then Ranger was pulled from production because when surgeons were trying to remove the bullets they were getting cut up by the frags. Now the FBI has standards for their ammo and Winchester calls that ammo Ranger but for the civilian market they call it Supreme Bonded PDX1. It meets the FBI standards.

dbltap:
The Doc's weren't actually getting cut up by frags, it was a mislead column in a medical journal that scared people into thinking they would get cut up by the frags. That column was based on a Winchester marketing program that claimed the bullet opened up with 6 razor points as it sliced its way through it's target. The whole basis for pulling the line of ammo was all from bad marketing. Winchester has all but disowned the Black Talon ammo, they will not defend it in court should the need arise. This is why I will never carry it in my gun. They will back the Ranger lines and the PDX1 even though it's all pretty much the same thing. I've seen the prices that some want for the Black Talon ammo, it is outrageous. I think people look at it kind of like a forbidden fruit. It got pulled by the manufacturer because it was too good, now I've got to get some and am willing to pay crazy prices for it. IMHO, their are plenty of other very good SD ammo's. Buy some fresh factory supply. I just recently picked up some police issue stuff from Federal, my expansion tests have shown it to be more than sufficient. I looked at the PDX1, but I couldn't justify the cost. Personally, I think it's more about good shot placement than any differences of the modern SD bullets.

This was a complete lie made up by the anti-gun groups. A surgeon came forward claiming that they were getting cut by the rounds when removed and it was an in- humane round. Well the problem was that no one had ever been shot by a Black Talon and Golden Saber didn't even exist. |
