If you could have any handgun there is, regardless of cost, but could choose only one, what would it be and why? From an all-around point. Something that can be easily carried, is accurate, and is reliable?
Me, I'd probably stand by one of the old WWII-era Colt M1911A1's. Or an H&K Mark 23 Mod 0.

to be practical, a 1911 45 with a 22 conversion kit. or any defense weapon with a conversion kit. Thank goodness we don't have to have just one.

Since I live on a small farm in a very low violent crime area, and don't really have a need for concealed carry, I'll stick with my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum.
But the second choice would be a bone stock Colt 70 Series Government Model 45. |

Marlin model 60... Holds enough ammo to kill just about anything and ammo is cheap and plentiful. plus they are very accurate

I would like to have one of the high end Wilson Combat 1911s.
A custom engraved Colt SAA 44WCF would be the bee's knee. Last edited by jacksonco; 04-30-2010 at 12:04 AM.. |

I'd be really Content with a Ruger SP101, in .357 magnum, w/ a 3" barrel.
A second choice would be a Ruger GP100, in .357 magnum w/ 3" barrel. The SP 101 is next to perfect for me. The GP100 gives an extra round & is easier to shoot but heavier to carry.

tough question, kind of like asking which is your favorite kid. my favorite is my nickled colt python with a 4in barrel. new in the box unfired. but if push comes to shove and i could only keep one gun it would be either one of my 1911's or my hi-power

The SP-101 is a fine weapon. I didnt like the grips that it came with so I bought some Hogue grips and what a difference! Feels good in my hand.

If I had to live with but one hand gun it would be a .22 and in my case , a S&W Model 63. For all around every day use a .22 can't be beat. ( or perhaps my Model 18 )

Les Baer Longslide. Problem is picking between 38 super, 45 acp or 10 MM.
Could you make that 3 handguns?

GP 100 4" Stainless. Built like a tank and a good compromise for hunting, woods walking and concealed carry.

Easy, my Glock 26. Small, easy to conceal and carry, utterly reliable and tolerant of any ammo I've found to shoot in it. And accurate, consistently accurate beyond my expectations. I've got three now, and they all are exactly the same ... excellent.

Sorry to have to disagree. You dont have to be in a high crime area to need to concealed carry. Anything can happen at anytime. You say N.E. fla. I am very familiar with that area. Where abouts?

STI 1911 USPSA
http://www.stiguns.com/guns/USPSA-SS/USPSA-SS.php Had one in the other day just for a minor hiccup on the backstrap safety. It was adding an additional 3oz to overcome the little machine mark on the already 3.5lb trigger out of the box. And I thought Wilsons were nice. If Wilsons were Corvettes then this dude was a Lamborghini.

The key being all around? I agree with the GP-100 vote, or any well made .357 mag revolver with min. 4" barrel. For me, "all around" is also about hunting, not just defense. A .45 acp is borderline for hunting deer, smaller auto calibers are asking for trouble. Survival is about getting food, not the challenge of the hunt, deer are challenging enough in a survival situation.
.38 spec and .357 is readily available, and very capable across the hunting and defense spectrum. Certainly a rifle would be better, but survival handguns should be able to fill in the gaps and act as backup. Shot loads, duplex loads, light and heavy, the revolver in .357 mag is the swiss army knife of handguns. |
