Question about the tip of the bullets. - The Firearms Forum

I guess it would be the bullet head, but what is the actual projectile from the bullet made of? I have heard many different answers ranging from lead to iron(which I highly doubt since it is so heavy) to steel and I just want to get the correct information.

various materials. Mostly from copper and lead for the most common. Other materials can be used for special reasons. Steel, brass, depleated uranium. Can you post a pic of what bullet your talking about? If you cant give a pic then tell us what bullet your talking about for ex is it a pistol round or rifle round and caliber

I do not have a camera, but the bullets in question are .223 Remington.

ok good were getting closer. who made it? Is it FMJ? In other words a fmj means there is a copper jacket that the lead is in. If you look at the bullet and it is copper all the way to the tip it is FULL METAL JACKET. If you were to pull the bullet apart you would see the back of the projectile was hollow at one time and lead filled in the center. So you have a lead based bullet with a copper jacket over it. That is the most common.

Does this sound like what you have?

What color is the case?

Yes that's what it looks like, I found a few of these on the dirt roads behind my house while walking my uncles dogs.

dont try to shoot them what ever you do. discard them. They may have been reloaded and done incorrectly. Also if they have been in the rain for a long period of time they may be bad. Could cause problems in a gun or to the shooter.

honestly I dont know, i just went to the ammoman web site to get a pic of some 223's. dont know who made them.

bmp, I don't know any thing about your experience with ammo and I don't want to offend you only give you some info if it will help. If you are just curious as to what makes up that cartridge then here is a picture showing from left to right the bullet, the powder, the brass case and the primer.

I was more interested in seeing how fine the powder was, but thanks. And arnt bullets supposed to have something called a 'dye' in it?

Different powders are shaped differently and some finer than others. When you ask about a bullet having dye in it, I am uncertain about the question. Most bullets are made of a lead (the good ones are steel) core surrounded by a copper jacket. Environmentally safe bullets have no lead in them. (So are my steel-core ammo considered environmentally safe? They aren't lead...) But, are you referring to the entire cartridge as a "bullet"? I can't come up with any reason there'd be dye inside the case tho.

Looks like the blue and red ones would be tracers.

The blue and red appear to be ballistic tip. The green one is speical. It has a piece of hard metal or steel behind the jacket tip for armor piercing

I've never heard of balistic tip before. What are they and how do they work/what do they do?

yes, the red tip is a 55gr V-max ballistic from Hornady. The blue is 40 gr V-max from Fiocchi and the green is indeed an armor peircing round from Igman (Bosnia).
