Figured so, but you can't assume when your hobby includes "propellants."

your hobby should have a foundation of lots of knowledge
before you start putting things with propellants together

keeping all your body parts attached and operational goes
a long way towards a long term positive mental outlook.

---abbreviations are found in the appendix of lymans, and other-reloading manuals
best $20.. you can spend to introduce yourself to reloading and how cart rages are made.

answers for your basic (very basic) question are in there. read it & know it well enough to
be able to find answers on your own. if this seems to much work for you than perhaps reloading isn't for you.

i am not meaning to be harsh on you--just that reloading isn't for everyone. it has a realitive level of danger--
to you making, to yourself and those around you [and your guns] at the range shooting em. its for you to decide.

Yes, I'm still in "apprenticeship" mode, which includes nights of manual-reading. I've mounted my press, cleaned off my workbench, added only reloading stuff to my workbench..................and now I go back to reading. Almost through 2 manuals, then I'll rewatch my RCBS dvd.

you-tube is a valuable asset for the beginner. Watch the videos both good and bad, you will see what works and what doesnt at the expense of some other idiot and his bodyparts and firearms

1911man--you sound like you have a plan and an understanding--very good

what type of press/caliber and model of gun(s) are you going to start with?
with that bit of info, we can perhaps toss out for you some of our favorite recipes
i'm gonna guess that one gun is a 1911 5" 45acp.........

Claude,
Yeah, I've been studying, reading, asking, reading, researching, shopping, pricing, reading and reading for, like, 7 months now on reloading. No worries about me jumping into this without doing so, nor should anyone else. I do take the act of reloading seriously so I'm doing all levels of due diligence before starting. Thanks, though.

a good single stage that will last 2 lifetimes. however it is more a rifle press than a high volume pistol.
but for learning it is excellent-one stroke= one function.

for a 5" bbl powder Unique or 231.
200 LSWC BB (beveled base) helps to minimize flair and thus prolong case life
LPP ( large pistol primers) any brand. some are harder than others but to a 1911 it matters not
for amount of powder follow the manual--compare a couple to double check and than start at the lower and work up in.3gr increments. find a charge that gives great accuracy. another that feels the same as a factory round--same poa/poi and perceived recoil. another receipt that duplicates the expensive SD rounds.
that gives you what to do fresh from the gate, ehh?

springer makes a nice gun, yes?

Perhaps you could fork over a favorite recipe for a really good 1911 45 acp recipe??

GunClinger has thrown down the gauntlet.....

i'll try--1st set crimp same as a factory round. it should come apart with the 3rg swing of the green bullet eraser.
i get 200gr LSWC [hard lead] from bulletworks, TN
i use bullseye cause i have 3" & 4.25 & 5" 1911's. 4.2gr of powder makes for a easy range round. good feel in a defender and even a 100 rounds doesn't fatigue my hand. 4.5 gr replicates a 230gr factory round for perceived recoil and poa/poi. 4.8gr replicates many SD's inc Saber.

i crono each time i re-order lead and there usually is a slight adjustment needed. say, .1gr up or down.

YMMV---virtually guaranteed
but the fun is in the doing.
and stock springs in all guns.
set for a low shoulder and the SWC feeds in all friends guns even when they insist it will only run with PRN. go figure

A powder question for all:

I'm using Bullseye, (45 ACP) but the cases are very black inside when expelled. Do other powders (231, or Unique) leave a cleaner burn? A guy at the range told me that it was more the primer than the powder that caused this. Anybody??

Claude,

You must have a diff. SWC than I'm getting. My 200g BB-LSWC's require 4.9 as min. At 5.7-5.8 grains, I'm getting a 'stock feel' from my weapon. (Book shows 6.0 as max load)

Another SWC in the same book shows loads more in the category you speak of, but they are not beveled base like the ones I'm using and also show a shorter OAL. My first attempt, I was a bit confused as to the diff, so I loaded 5 rounds at 4.2g. I had to get above 5 grains before it felt like a .45 again. Pleasant to shoot as the recoil was very minimum, but definitely weak and left a lot of residue around the outside of the case.

I have been making some target rounds for a couple of my friends using 200gr lswc bullets and 3.5gr Bullseye. You can almost see them go downrange but thats what they wanted. I use 200gr Ranier round nose with 5 gr Bullseye.

rocklin-- lymans shows as you describe: one swc has 2 lube groves, the other 1
thats why i specified bulletworks as to the exact bullet i use.
it is not either of the ones lyman shows.....but it works great!

reason perfect as to why one man's great formula is anothers' no-big-deal.

as for the case being black inside--it don't matter in the least and most will clean out in the vibrater.

--GunClinger--s o s l o w
try shooting east with a late afternoon sun;
stand behind the shooter on the sun side----
you will see the bullet go down range!!
quite commen to see in CASS when you know where to stand

200 plated w/ 5.0 of bullseye is bookin. have you crono'ed it?

No I havnt. I have to get one of those. Any suggestions for one?
I am kinda in between the lead and jacketed loads and do not have any lead build-up in any of our .45's but I will drop the load a little bit.
The .45's I make for the friends dont work very good in my Springfield TRP. The springs are too strong for them. I was using only 3.2 gr Bullseye which worked well for them but when this cold weather hit Florida they were getting stovepipes so I upped it a bit and now workes in all weather.

...bullets got all-weather powder?

i like to stay with stock spring strength so that if a 'hot' round gets in there, no problem.

beta-master crony has been with to the range for 20 odd years.
the remote read out is great. around $100.

FL cold weather-----poor baby
my folks retired there--anything below 80 to them is a cold wave.

Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. I'm pretty new to this and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something!

They are 100% correct! My feelings exactly. Here is your Global warming in action.

I will check out the beta-master crony. Thanks for the tip!
