H414 vs IMR 4831

I was tired of keeping the temperature of my cartridges somewhat constant with the H414 anyway, but I have changed over to IMR 4831 for my Hornady 190gr SPBTs for the summer at least. It seems that H414 is even more sensitive at higher temperatures. (Today the temperature got above 80º, (I had developed that load at 70º.))
Since I've switched, I have noticed a big difference.

Here is the target from earlier today at 100 yards using H414. I was trying to get a zero after missing my 400 yard shot, then missing a 300 yard shot.



I was getting a sticky bolt so I then took the rest of the cartridges I had loaded and pulled the bullets to make a totally new load.

I had a lot of IMR 4064 that shoots well in the Springfield & Eddystone no matter what the temp but I also had some IMR 4831 that I bought for the heavier bullets that my twist will not stabilize, so I went for it.

Long story short; I shot 3 shots to get my zeros at 100, 200 and 300 yards.
I sure hope IMR 4831 is temperature friendly like IMR 4064 has been!

That's interesting. I use H414 for many of my loads and never detected that much of a difference between hot and cold weather. But maybe I attributed poor scores on the target to my shooting. Now I have another excuse! YEA!

Hodgdon has been working towards temperature compensating powders in recent times. Unfortunately it does not appear yet to be for any of my favorite ball powders. Here is the list from their website of Extreme" Hodgdon powders that are temperature compensating:

That looks like a good candidate for a replacement if the IMR 4831 doesn't pan-out. My Hornady handbook has that listed for the 190gr bullet.
