Gotta rant about this somewhere !
ttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/07/27/why-dogs-chase-laser-beams-and-why-it-can-drive-them-nuts/ What sort of loony would torture his dog with a laser spot ? Having stimulated their "prey/pursuit" response you deliberately deny them the mouth feel of the capture. Of course it'll "drive them nuts" ! Let me loose with visual cues on your basic drives and I'll drive you nuts, too !! Have we, as a nation, grown so stupid as to not understand our pets ? Or so perverse as to find amusement in fustrating their basic drives ? !! Being an old man I might not be able to thrash someone doing this, but I can implement a "solution" that will satisfy me and the dog ! >MW

You have got to be kidding me. My Dogs and Cats will stare at the Lazer setting on the end stand and whine and yowl until I pick up the lazer and let them chase it. The cat will run over the sleeping dogs then they all chase it. Who ever told you that they need to feel the capture every time. Have you ever trained a gun dog??? Is every hunt successful..
If you don't like my piont of view I will send my animals over to beat your animals up. ![]() ![]() ![]()

theres a young couple down a ways here , they too back onto the national park
they where getting cats coming out and killing off chickens and ducks and such so they spend a few evenings a week with one of these lazer pointer do dads and point it at a tree trunk just inside their fence line and jiggle it some ( i think they have a wind up toy or something makes it shake a small amount but over 80 yards its 2-3 inches ) whole thing sits on a little rubber wire legs tripod thing , cool gadget eh any feral cats see that they are at it like a shot stop where they think they can get a gook look and thats where he tag's them with the .22 great cat bait .. they got 200+ cats the first year they where telling me when i moved here .. and never got out of his seat till he went picked up the bod's and tossed to the pigs never had one as a pet so dunno if its good or bad for that cat you'd have to include just about every cat toy about if so , for the same reasoning as the lazer eh? besides live mice and that'd be a PETA issue Last edited by jack404; 07-28-2012 at 01:00 AM.. |

I have to admit, I on occasion will get ahold of a laser pointer and mess with the dog for a few minutes. I have to step in when the kid gets a hold of it for too long though.... in moderation, it's too fun to resist!
make up for it with some extra frisbee or ball tosses later, that's all...

Yeah my dog is so torture sleeping in a $2500 bed every night eats the best dog food on the market has a laundry basket full of so many toys its over flowing. My cats sleep where ever they want eat the best food have a hole in my bedroom door to come and go as the please get wet food every night have the best free medical care in the world well free to them. My one cat cost us $1500 for bladder surgery. Our newest one cost us $750 not 1 month after we adopted her because she had an infection where her rbcs were bursting. Go smoke more of your medical marijuana. Cause that's the dumbest king I have ever heard. |

MW, I am scratching my head trying to figure out where you got the idea that this is torture. It's play and they seem to enjoy it. I mean, I'll keep an open mind but I would need some evidence that this is cruel.

I do the same with my lil guy and he loves it.I treat my dog better than most humans. He chews on me all the time so maybe he is paying me back.I dont feel I am cruel as I would never treat any animal cruelly.Heck I feed and water 3 stray cats round here cause I hate seeing a animal go hungry.Plus they enjoy harrassing my dog.The sit on the patio and stick thier tongue at him.

To me, torturing a cat or dog would be tying a can to their tail or a string of firecrackers. I have never done this and would likely beat the crap out of anyone I caught doing so. My wife plays with our cats using a laser pointer constsntly. One cat lies in ambush for the dot to come out of the hall and then chases it all over the room. However, evidently my cats must be smarter than most since there are a lot of times when they just watch the dot and totally ignore the bloody thing. Torture, to me, is a physical act that cause bodily harm and I will not condone such an act anywhere.

I think they call that porn. The industry seems to be doing pretty well. ![]()

My dog doesn't have an interest in the lasers. She'll chase it for a minute or two, then she'll go and get one of her toys. We tried it a few times, and she always ends up wanting to play with a stuffed animal. So that's what we do.
Like people, animals are individuals. Some enjoy the game of chasing, with praise from the owner being reward enough. Mine likes to feel the catch in her teeth, and proves it with something live (formerly live ) at least weekly.

I'm afraid my dogs are liberals (all they do is wait for someone to give them shelter, food and entertainment). Sure hope they don't get the pre-filled out voter registration in the mail.....guess that is why Holder thinks it is racist...they are both "mixed" breeds.

I had to hide my Lazer pointer because Sheba would drag it around the house (the cat in my avatar).
My cats love to play "chase the dot". It even exceeds "use the TV console as a slap-shot goal for the stuffed mice toys".

To add another point of view, the dog whisperer, doesn't like the lazer pointers either. He had a show about how a service dog (shepard) would chase shadows after playing with a lazer pointer. He had to break the dog of the habit in order to work properly.

I consider this to be over worry.
I have heard it said that laser pointers spend ten hours entertaining cats for every one hour they are used in business meetings, and I believe this is about correct. I had a cat when I was an apartment dweller, and chasing that red dot was the only exercise she got! My favorite two: 1. Zip it across the floor, up over the couch, and right on up the wall. She would follow, and SPRING from the back of the couch trying to scramble up the wall to get it. 2. Trace it around the floor in several patterns until she was really intent on it, then bring it right up to the edge of a throw-rug and turn it OFF. She was just SURE the dot had gotten under the rug, and she would flip the rug up and dive under it, scooting around like a mole under there trying to find it.

I have a mini remote controlled helicopter and chase the cats with it. They love to chase the pointer but to get away they jump up on a cat perch we have for them. I can get up there with the heli and it drives them nuts LOL.
Don't do it with the lab cause he would eat it.

Ya, all of our cat's are in therapy because MamaOzo
accidentally set her purse on a laser she uses for presentation and it was left on for almost half of a minute before she realized what was happening..... It was like a trip on LSD-25 for them, and is now costing us thousands of dollars each for their psychiatric care...... but we love them and are rich, so we don't mind the cost. And, before you ask...or ridicule us, YES, we did turn ourselves in and suffered the consequences to our[her] ignorant behavior. And we ask you all also, please forgive us....we have learned from our mistake.

I have an English Springer and he is not the
smartest dog that I have ever had. He is very energetic and friendly. When we play with the lazer pointer he enjoys himself for about a minute or two, then calmly walk over to me and looks right at the pointer and sits, staring at me the whole time, as if to say "OK, had your fun" ? The cats seem to know where the light is coming from but are not able to keep from chasing. |
