.308 Winchester loads with 110 gr bullet - The Firearms Forum

Does anyone have a personal favorite load for .308 Winchester with an 110gr bullet? I am going to experiment with some loads for my Remington 600; the rifle is a good physical fit for my oldest boy. I obviously want to keep the recoil down, hence the choice of a light bullet. The round will be used for hunting Georgia deer. I am leaning towards the Hornady Spire Point bullet as it is intended for hunting and not a varmint bullet.

I know that the load may not be ideal, but it would certainly be lethal to deer.

My objective is to take something that I already have and use it for my son to hunt with while spending as little as possible. I currently reload .308 Winchester; I have cases, powder, and primers therefore I would only need to buy a box of bullets. I have checked my manuals and the two powders I currently have in supply are suitable for 110gr bullets.

Disclaimer:
I will use loads from a reloading manual so no need to preach safety, I get that.

I haven't loaded any 110 in a long time, but my records show very good accuracy with 46.5 gr. of 4895. Shot through a Rem. 788, shows 1" groups at 100 yds, more then adequate for deer.

Here is some of my load data:

8/13/2009 N. GA
FN PBR w/ 20" barrel
Chrono'd at 12'

Brass: New Lapua (neck sized, trimmed to 2.05", flash holed deburred, PP uniformed)
Powder: IMR 4064
Primer: CCI BR2 LR
Bullet: Hornady V-MAX 110gr.
OAL: 2.720"

45.0 grains IMR 4064 = 2840 fps - Ave. 10 shot string - SD 17.6, ES 51fps
46.0 grains IMR 4064 = 2903 fps - Ave. 10 shot string - SD 15.3, ES 52fps
47.0 grains IMR 4064 = 2968 fps - Ave. 10 shot string - SD 11.5, ES 31fps

I used the 110 gr sierra HPs in my .30-06 and got over 3400 fps with IMR 4064. Good luck with your trials...

A friend gave me a brand new box of Speer 110gr hollowpoints and 10-15 Hornady 110gr Spire Points.. I can't wait to spend some time at the reloading bench.

they are very explosive at that velocity. I shot a skunk with it at about 60 yds and it turned him inside out. Also ahot an armadillo and it peeled his shell off him. Aint got to kill me no coyotes yet with it but I cant wait to. The hydro kinetic shock should be drastic enough to work on deer size game as well...

Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
