Great Story!

In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace. This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them their call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination.

I just flew with a guy who overheard the following conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai. It is too good not to pass along.

The conversation went like this:

Iranian Air Defense Radar: “Unknown aircraft, you are in Iranian Airspace. Identify yourself.”

US Aircraft: “This is a United States Aircraft. I am in Iraqi Airspace.”

Iranian Air Defense Radar: “You are in Iranian Airspace. If you do not depart our airspace, we will launch Interceptor Aircraft!”

US Aircraft: “This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 Fighter. Send ‘em up! I’ll wait!”

Iranian Air Defense Radar: No Response … … No Interceptors either.

Some day the dumb a$$'s are going to shoot down a passenger jet because they think it's in there airspace...did'nt that already happen?

It has happened many times, but the only one that involved Iran was a U.S. cruiser shooting down an Iran Air flight.

Yup, it is very good indeed.

I'd be willing to bet that F-18 had white ones hung on his hard points and was loaded for bear.

Pistolenschutze...does a lady dare ask what this means--"I'd be willing to bet that F-18 had white ones hung on his hard points and was loaded for bear."--or should I go back to the kitchen, bypassing the parlor?

I'm pretty sure this is what he means.

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a supersonic, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile carried by fighter aircraft. It has a high-explosive warhead and an active infrared guidance system. The Sidewinder was developed by the US Navy for fleet air defense and was adapted by the U.S. Air Force for fighter aircraft use.

I have a favourite exchange I thought I would mention. It was in the Falkland Islands as the Argentinians invaded. The Islands Governor was in Government House and most of the 'Falkland Island Defence Force' (armed volunteers) were in a small hut, surround by the Argentinian army..

Telephone conversation:

Defence Force: We are surrounded Sir.

Governor: shoot them.

Defence Force: There are rather a lot of them Sir.

Governor: Well shoot some of them.
