.308 Win/175 gr SMK powder question - The Firearms Forum

Looking for some input on powder choices. We are shooting through a 24" barrel with a 1 in 10 twist on a Savage 308 Winchester rifle. Have good quantities of several slower burning powders for the 270 WSM and 300 Win Mag and would like to use them. Any experience with:

IMR 4350, H4350 or Hybrid 100V? We use IMR 4831 and H4831/4831SC too and have plenty but expect these burn too slow to use. Probably H1000 completely out of the question?

I doubt there'll be room in a 308 case with 175's for something as slow as 4831. I'd check your load manuals for the 4350. I would think you'd be in the 4064, 4895, varget range of powders.

All of those listed are far too slow for the .308. The .308 is best served with medium speed rifle powders, something in the Varget, IMR4895, Reloder15 range.

I have been using Alliants powerpro 2000MR, it is very close in burn speed to BLC2, and under a 175 gr SMK from my Savage is 1/4MOA at 200 yds.

I agree with JLA above... 4895 and 4064, Varget and RL15 are the powders to go to.

However, if you really want to use up your 4350, shoot a compressed charge of 50 to 50.2 grains... working up from 48 grains to be sure...

You'll probably get close to 2600 fps, maybe a bit more.

Agree 100% with JLA and Dan...IMR 4895 and Varget work great for me...Heard good things about 4064 and RL 15 but not had time to work up some loads with this powder.
