Winchester 296 powder - The Firearms Forum

I bought a bunch of stuff from a guy getting out of reloading, gave away the rifle dies and bullets, kept the primers, pistol dies, extra RCBS press and a couple pounds of Winchester 296 powder. I load .38/.357, 9MM and .45ACP. I usually use BULLSEYE, or UNIQUE, sometimes 231 and H110. I can't find any information on loading 296, it shows up just a tad slower burning than H110, which I use in the .357, anybody have any info on loads with this stuff?

Checking those tables, it appeaars that H110 and 296 are identical. Powder weights are the same all thru the list of bullet weights.

They are identical. H110 and WW296 are the same powder, sold under two different names. They also have another pair like that. I believe it is HP38 and WW231, but don't quote me on that one. I don't load that powder. I do load 296/110. Write Hodgden and ask 'em. They'll tell you. Same powder.

yup alpo, H110=W296, HP-38=W231. There are a couple others as well H414=W748 ?? (not sure) HS7-W541(popgunner reminded me

) Dont hold me to em, I couldnt find the issue of handloader i read it in...

I agree 296 and H110 are one in the same and would add that when using them one should not "light" load with them. They do best on the hot side and I always use magnum primers and crimp well.

Thts the one pop, not the hs-6 i mentioned last post. W541 is a discontinued powder and hs-7 is its replacement. I remember now...

Hodgdon makes no powder itself but is a powder distributor. For years they had manufacturers around the world make powder to their specs. Recently they became the sole distributor of all the Winchester powders, the IMR powders and of course their own powders, still made by several other powder manufactures. Winchester's powder factory use to make several of the Hodgdon powders that were the same as Winchester powders. Today Hodgdon tells you which powders are exactly the same, like:

W231 = H38
W296 = H110
etc

When you go through the Hodgdon on-line reloading center the equivalents are revealed there by EXACTLY the same reloading recipes. There are others that I did not mention. Visit the site and all will be revealed.

When it comes to H110 or W296 you MUST follow the reloading data exactly as listed. Grave results may result if you don't.

The latest caliber or gear is no substitute for experience and skill. Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
