Hello all and welcome back Terry! It will be good to hear from you again.
I feel rather foolish. I had a website saved that I accidentally deleted. It was a verse-by-verse Bible commentary. The comments were inserted directly into the text. It included comments by the author himself and well-known writers like Spurgeon. For the life of me, I can't remember the website or the author. I know this is a vague description, but can anyone point me to the website? Thanks much, Krogen.

I finally found it again! Thought I'd share it with you guys. Click on the text icons; some have audio as well. I like the way the commentaries are inserted into the scripture.
I hope y'all enjoy this: http://www.enduringword.com/library_commentaries.htm Krogen |

It's always good to read anothers opinion, or the opinion of others. We are all influenced by others opinions. Thank you for posting the link.

Commentaries can be very useful at times, but a great degree of caution is required, as these are the opinions of human beings - and all of that group is flawed. As much as I love Spurgeon, there are points on which I greatly differ from his take on things.

Good points, guys. Thanks. Also applies to the various translations. Terry, I recall you favor the King James version because of concerns about later interpretations. Commentaries, when taken with a grain of salt, can help. I'll be careful to remember they are indeed written by humans.

You can download "WordSearch9" here: http://www.wordsearchbible.com/
For in depth research & study, I also like Biblos.com and BibleGateway.com. Another one I've used some is: http://www.biblicalproportions.com/ You can find a free online "audio" Bible to help with daily devotional reading here: http://www.listenersbible.com - Last edited by tcox4freedom; 05-01-2012 at 10:52 AM.. |

Yes, I do lean on the KJV. I have chased a lot of passages back into the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, and the KJV is the closest to the originals while still being readable.
The original languages did not have our syntax. It is more than just the meanings of the words, it is how they are put together. If you have a word-for-word translation with NO changes in the order of the words, it is almost unreadable to an English speaking person. So the task becomes to not only change the words to English, but figure out how to make it understandable without doing too much damage to the original structure. Some modern versions do a good job - others not so good. I advise folks to read whatever version is easy for them; God's Word Translation is VERY easy to read, for instance. But if anything sounds odd, compare it to the KJV to make sure it has not been changed beyond the original meaning. And if there is STILL doubt, drag out a Strong's concordance and check each word in the KJV against the original languages. The Bible is outstanding. One can read completely through it in a few weeks. And one can study it for a lifetime and STILL find new things in it.
