I've had very good results with a 55 grain Hornady in front of 20 grains of IMR 4198. That gets you about 3,000 FPS.

It's a 1 in 9 twist, Tim. The rifle is a Stevens (Savage) Model 200 bolt action. I've also had good results with a load of 26 grains of Varget behind a 55 grain Speer spitzer. The Mod 200 is a very accurate rifle I might add.

There is a problem with your fast twist barrel. If you shoot normal 55 grain bullets in it, the barrel twist rate may explode them before they reach the target. If you go through the numbers your 55 grain bullet would be revolving at 307,200 RPM!!!! I went through this with my fast twist barrel (1 in 8 inches, I believe). Non-Match bullets actually exploded from the high twist rate and never reached the target. If I used Match 55 grainers they made it to the target but were not all that accurate. I found I had to move to the heavy bullets to get good accuracy from the fast twist. I now use Hornady 75 gr Match HPBT bullets and get superb accuracy from my AR-15 style heavy Lothar Walther varmint barrel. I suppose you could slow down 55 grainers and they might survive but fast twist barrels were designed for heavy 22cal bullets, not slow moving normal weight bullets. LDBennett |

My Bushmaster DCM has a 1-8 twist. For out to 200 yards I'm using the 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. For across the course matches I'm using the 77 grain Nosler Match BTHP for the 200 and 300 yard stages and 80 grain Nosler Match BTHP at 600 yards. All loads use Varget, CCI primer and a variety of case brands (mostly Remington).

Savage Model 12 .... 1 in 9 twist. Lepold Varmint 6.5 x 20
24.2 grains of 2230 behind the 50 grain varmint grenade = .44" 100 yard groups. zeroed @ 200yds. My rifle seems to like this load combination. It's been great..... longest PD kill has been 430 yards with witnesses, "ya hoo" Good results with 27.3 grains of 2520, same bullet with .56 groups @ 100yds |
