Default .30 Carbine AP rounds, question

I was at a local antique firearms and military show this weekend and a guy was selling supposedly AP rounds for 85.00 a box of 50. My problem is i didn't buy them because they looked like regular FMJ's aren't they supposed to have a black tip? What should i look for incase i see him again and think about purchasing a box or 2?

And if they are steel core, bring along a magnet and stick it to the tip of the bullet

30 carbine was never made in AP. The round is not effective as AP, not sufficient energy. None of my manuals show any AP in 30 carbine.

Even if they're steel core that doesn't make 'em AP.

I like shooting the little orphan M1 Carb. But an M1 Carb. as an anti-tank weapon They are hell on Coors Cans and marginal on prairie dogs.
