What will the Health Care Reform Bill do?
Cuts $500 billion from Medicare. Forces rationing of health care. Raises income taxes to 43% from 35% and capital gains taxes to 22.5% from 15%. Forces the American people to pay, on average, an additional $2,000 more for health insurance premiums. Forces young people to buy insurance they don't need or want and would cost over $8,500 per person or pay 2.5% of their income as a fine for not having insurance or face prison if they don't do either. Taxes medical devices and many medical procedures. Why the fight is really in the House! President Obama is pushing very hard to pass Health Care reform using the reconciliation process. Reconciliation, part of the budget process designed to raise or lower revenues or spending, was never designed as a way to change the rules to pass controversial policy changes that otherwise would fail for lack of 60 votes needed to invoke cloture. As outrageous as reconciliation is, ultimately it's a distraction, and free-market activists who focus on it may miss the real fight in the U.S. House of Representatives. The reconciliation process cannot even begin until after the House passes the Senate bill exactly as it passed the Senate on Christmas Eve. That means it must pass with the abortion language already rejected by Rep. Bart Stupak and others still intact. It also must pass with the outrageous pork barrel spending deals cut for Nebraska, Louisiana, Connecticut, and others. In other words, the bill must pass the House with everything in it that the American people have already made clear they hate. That real fight is in the House, and will be over, in victory or defeat, before the Senate does or doesn't use reconciliation. We must act now! 1. Call, write and fax a letter to the members of the U.S House of Representatives listed below. Tell them about all of the ways in which this Health Care Bill will hurt our country. Tell them to listen to the American people! 2. Stay informed. Knowledge is power. Visit the links listed below to educate yourself on the topic. Of course the reform bill has been hijacked by the usual moneyed interests and the sole beneficiaries will be the large insurance companies. However anyone who doesn't understand that our healthcare system is broken and that rates of employer sponsored health insurance peaked in 2000 and has been declining ever since is at best unaware, at worst blind.
The US pays more and on average receives less care than most industrialized nations. The rate of increase of healthcare costs is unsustainable. Why should healthcare not be like other public services such as firemen, police, librarians, etc. Why can't a public and private option coexist like public and private universities? There is a misconception that care is available for people without insurance and few if any can afford to the insurance inflated prices at hospitals or clinics. Most of us are one job loss away from no health insurance, or one disease away from bankruptcy. People are and will die because lack of access to health care. Our health care system already costs billions, it's just that a significant percentage of it is going to a profit based insurance companies that neither provide a service or enhance care, a mult-billion dollar for profit industry between the provider of a service and the consumer of the service is not a free market solution it's more akin to the type of insurance offered by the mob. While I'm no fan of the government it amazes me how freely people provide information to insurance companies and other businesses and are afraid to answer the 10 question census.

kingcuke, the medical industry may be broke, but it is still some of the best in the world. One of the big problems I see is that the Feds. have promised the public more than they can deliver. i.e. the Feds. keep cutting fees for service to the providers, Drs. and Hospitals while extending coverage. Then all of a sudden we have a health care crisis. Now they want to seize 1/6th of the economy and raid that cash cow until it is a shadow of what it once was. The Fed. Leviathan is a cash vampire, long on promises and cost and short of performance. That doesn't count the massive control of our lives inclusive in this da**able legislation.
Just wait until this Congress legalizes 12 million illegal aliens (probably twice that in fact) which will put a massive strain on our medical system. Somehow I don't think the shortage of Drs. will be filled by this lot.
